Three nuts-and-bolts, behind-the-scenes nuggets about the haunted houses at Universal's Halloween Horror Nights, which begins Friday:
*They're handicap-accessible. "Every hallway is 44 inches, even though you think about Halloween as confining," says Michael Roddy, show producer at Universal. Each corner is wide enough for a wheelchair.
*Plans go to the city, which inspects after construction. "These are attractions," Roddy says. "These are built to the same specifications that Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit had to go through."
*But safety can hurt continuity. "We appreciate it because it's safe," Roddy says. "But sometimes it bothers us because you need this many exit signs in there." It seems Dr. Frankenstein was in violation of fire codes.
