Welcome to SCarey: Horror in the Heartland was one of the ten haunted houses that were featured during Halloween Horror Nights 30. It was located at the MIB Tent and featured scenes depicting houses and scarezones from the past set in Carey, Ohio.
History and Location[]
For their 2020 Halloween Horror Nights event, Universal was planning to hold a haunted house centered around Carey, Ohio (a small town used as a setting for many Halloween Horror Nights attractions in the past) to celebrate the 30th Halloween Horror Nights year. The house would include many different scenes each taking place in a haunted house or scarezone from the past that took place in Carey. After Halloween Horror Nights was cancelled that year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Universal postponed the opening of this haunted house until the following year.
On August 12th, 2021, Universal announced that Welcome to SCarey: Horror in the Heartland would be coming to Halloween Horror Nights that year. The house would be relatively unchanged from it's original plan in 2020. The Codename for this House was "Sink".
The house would be located in a temporary tent located behind the Men in Black extended queue. The tent would be put up before the event (to hold the haunted house) and taken down after the event.
Description[]
In Carey, bad things just happen. No one escapes from this small town beset by an endless parade of bloodthirsty creatures and maniacs.
The town placed a sign at the entrance to Carey, Ohio, saying it’s a nice place to live. Unfortunately nobody lives here very long. No one escapes from Carey, where bad things just happen, and new terrors rain down year after year.
- If it claws, bites, feasts on blood, or just likes to rip people to shreds, it somehow finds its way to Carey.
- Experience an endless parade of unimaginable terrors, from horrifying creatures to bloodthirsty maniacs.
- You can scream all you want in Carey. But everybody’s too busy doing their own screaming to pay much notice.
Production Die-Ries[]
Horror Comes Home
Years ago when HHN designers needed a town in which to set their most horrifying tales of the paranormal and supernatural, they turned to one of their own who grew up in a small Midwest town named Carey. And ever since it has become a Halloween Horror Nights tradition.
In Carey the dead do not remain so. The "unbalanced" never regained stability. And the truly deranged practice to hone their acts of unspeakable horror. Over the years this has been the home to a psychotic psychiatrist, a morbid groundskeeper, a twisted TV station, a horrid hospital and an orphanage of strange children who will never be adopted...to name just a few among many others.
Experience[]
Queue and Facade[]
The queue entered to the right of the Fear Factor Stage. The queue would go through the exterior Men in Black extended queue before reaching the front of the tent, which held the facade.
The facade was a giant town sign reading "Welcome to (S)Carey: A Nice Place to Live (Die)! with parts (in paranthesis) being graffitied in red. The sign also depicted a smiling family. Guests would enter the house to the left of the facade, where they would see a welcome post with various symbols of the groups involved in Carey, Ohio.
Guests would then go down a mossy brick hallway with a sign reading "Pump House No. 30". Behind them, Meaty Meetz would originally startle them with his chainsaw before guests entered the house.
Haunted House[]
Guests would enter the Pump House and proceed to the sewers from The Spawning, where various lights flashed from overhead and green slimy eggs were scattered about. Guests went down a hallway where they could see a newly redesigned static-figure of a Sculder coming out of a sewer tunnel. A panel would drop to the left of guests and a Sculder could be seen behind it. Another Sculder would jump out at guests from the left in this hallway, and as they turned the corner, the same Sculder would scare from another angle on the left while another Sculder attacked guests on the right as they exited the sewers.
Guests would then enter the cave from Hive, where a Vampire Bat Creature would pop out of a boo-hole on the right, while another one would pop out on the left. A couple of vampires could be seen hanging upside down in this scene. One of the Vampire Bat Creatures from before would attack guests on the right as they made their way into the next room. Still in Hive, guests would find themselves in a small room of 19 Hemingway Lane, with small cracks on the walls and a skeleton behind a hole in the wall. As guests left the section, Nicodemus would jump out at guests on the left.
Guests would then enter the Wyandot Estate from Legendary Truth: The Wyandot Estate and go down a hallway with wires going along the wall. On the left, a ghost would walk down the hall looking at guests. Guests would then enter the living room, where the two windows on the left would systematically show a white UV face lighting up until another ghost popped out at guests next to the second one. Additionally, the embers in the fireplace would turn from red to blue. Guests would then be scared by another ghost on their left before entering the next scene.
Guests would enter the dark and decrepit attic of the Old Hartford Mansion from Dead End. On the right, a ghost would pop out at guests. At the end of the small room, guests could see a ghost floating in front of a window as lighting flashed outside. This served as a distraction, as another ghost would jump out in front of it scaring guests out of the room.
Guests would then find themselves outside Carey Elementary School from The Skoolhouse while a slowed down version of Pink Floyd's Another Brick on the Wall Pt. 2 played. Guests would see a swing set and the static figure of a child with a chicken mask behind one of the windows. The school was badly burnt, with hot glowing embers scattered around it, and guests would enter the building through the left. Inside the burning and collapsing Skoolhouse, guests would encounter a Tiger-Masked Child, who would attack guests on the left. Guests continued further to see Mr. Renshaw on the right wielding a cane. Before exiting the Skoolhouse, guests would be attacked by Cindy Caine, who would scream at guests in an homage to The Orfanage: Ashes to Ashes haunted house.
Guests would then enter the Channel 21 WKNB Station from H.R. Bloodengutz Presents: Holidays of Horror where a poster hung advertizing H.R. Bloodengutz's Midnight Mayhem show. Going down the hallway, guests could see a television set depicting H.R. Bloodengutz torturing John Reynolds, an "applause sign", and various posters depicting holiday-themed horror movies: Ho Ho Homicide and the Feaster Bunny. Continuing into the room, guests would see various props and costumes from the holiday-themed horror movies. H.R. Bloodengutz would pop out from behind a curtain and scare guests on the left. Additionally, a holiday scareactor (either one of Santa's Elves or a Leprechaun) would jump out from behind a costume rack.
Passing by the door to John Reyolds office, guests would enter a short hallway with Slaughter Sinema posters: those of Midnight Snack 2: The House Swarming and Sorority Sacrifice. A poster featuring Leave it to Cleaver also appeared, featuring Meaty Meetz. After that, guests would enter the Meetz Meats deli from Leave it to Cleaver. The smell of barbecue (similar, if not identical to the one featured in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) became prominent. Immediately on the left, Meaty Meetz would pop out from in front of the entrance doors to the shop while on the right, a commercial for Meetz Meats played on a television sitting on top of a meat display. Before guests exited the room, Sam Meetz would run out from behind a set of double doors wielding a meat cleaver. Guests would then venture inside the meat locker, where various bloody hanging corpses and body parts could be seen scattered around and hung upside down. Two Meetz Meats Employees would pop out at guests, one wearing plaid with an electric carving knife and one in a suit and tie, before they exited the scene.
Guests would enter the finale, which took place in Hellgate Prison during a prison break. Guests would pass by a security room window and see a guard with his face smashed through the glass. Various lights flashed as guests ventured down a final chainlink fence and brick lined corridor. A Hellgate Prisoner (or a Dog of War from Havoc: Dogs of War depending on the cast) would pop out at the very end on the right wielding a chainsaw, as guests exited the house.

- The family figures on the facade seem heavily inspired by the Springwood sign from Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare [1].
- The facade to this house was referenced in 2020 with "He had seen a lit sign with smiling folks on it welcoming people as the train moved past. Carey? Corey? Yeah, Corey, Ohio. Must be it. Delmar thought to himself." in the story released by Patrick Braillard called Bad Following Good.
- The Peck's Bar & Grill on the sign next to the facade is referenced in the 2020 story released by Patrick Braillard called Bad Following Good.
