For fright-seekers converging on Universal Studios Florida this month, there are a few things that should stick out - blood, vomit, misshapen dolls and severed limbs.
In this, the ninth year of Halloween Horror Nights, Universal is trying out a relatively new 3-D effect at its premier haunted house - Universal's Creature Feature.
By using special paint in the maze and equipping customers with 3-D glasses, designers have added one more weapon to an arsenal of devices that keep customers off balance and easy to scare.
``We get them distracted and get their minds occupied on something else,'' said haunted house designer Adrian LePeltier. ``Then we bring out the scare.''
And for those people brave enough - some might say silly enough - to wear those 3-D glasses around the rest of the park, there will be a variety of surprises. Designers are using that special paint to spice up the event's parade and add an extra touch to other areas of the park.
The event's 19-night run continues today. The haunted festival, which requires a separate ticket, begins after the theme park's regular attractions close for the day. It will run today through Sunday and then start again on Oct. 21 through Halloween.
Similar to last year, Universal's ``Halloween Horror Nights IX: The Last Gasp'' features five haunted houses, the Season of the Witch Parade and three stage shows, including crowd favorite ``Bill and Ted's Excellent Halloween Adventure.''
The other haunted houses:
This year also will feature a twisted version of the carnival midway, ``Midway of the Bizarre,'' where customers will play warped versions of many popular arcade games, with fittingly unusual prizes.
For those who are faint of heart, the ones who are forced by friends to spend an evening at Universal running from chain saw-toting maniacs, here is a tip:
Hard as it may be, look tough and project one of those auras that says ``I am not afraid.''
Universal teaches the people who play the crazed clowns, serial killers and mutated beasts to prey upon the weak. Hide in the middle of your group, and you might as well paint a bull's-eye on your forehead.
