Description (2006)[]

Take a journey into Universal Studios' horror filled past. Come face-to-face with some of the most terrifying characters ever created at this ultimate slaughter house party. This attraction is now year-round.

Description (2007)[]

Step inside the shadowy catacombs and encounter a series of ever changing horror inspired by a veritable "Who's Who" of Universal Horror Stars.

Storyline[]

In 2006, it was a part of the “film” Pavel Praenvsky was making. The setting for the film was the frozen fortress of Vladislaus from Van Helsing (2004) which was now home to a variety of slashers.

In 2007, it was a part of Jack’s Carnival where classic movie monsters roam.

Experience (2006 and 2007)[]

in 2006 it was merely the Van Helsing: Fortress Dracula attraction but with monsters from both Universal and non-Universal monsters appearing. 2007 saw most of the attraction revamped with rooms pertaining to each of the Universal Classic Monsters as well as Chucky and a homage to the Dawn of the Dead films in the morgue of body bags scenes.

Guests would first enter the castle of Count Dracula; which in 2006 had skeletons impaled on stakes as a homage to the Vlad myth. Then they make their way to the catacombs where skeletons would pop out in glass windows. Nosferatu would appear in 2007.

After that guests would make their way to an archway, in 2006 a statue of the Richard Eoxburgh Dracula would greet guests with lines in the film, 2007 replaced it with statues of The Phantom and his strangled victim. Going up the stairs, a statue of the Red Masque Phantom would appear behind a window with a grin.

Then guests would come across a hallway filled with statues of dark figures with skull-faces in robes. One of them was actually a live minion and one statue was actually a maquette of the rotted pre-regenerative 1999 Mummy. This statue would be retained in 2007 without the robe while all the others were replaced by various mummies and the set was changed to a tomb setting in Egypt.

Leaving the hallway, guests came to a room filled with boxes that had pop-out props similar to the attic heads from the Haunted Mansion. In 2006, it was the Vampire babies from Van Helsing with various “vampire eggs” hanging from the ceiling, in 2007 it was all themed to the serial killer Charles Lee Ray with various Good Guy dolls all around. A short pop-out scare by Chucky himself hiding in a roll of plush toys.

Then guests would make their way to another hallway where a projection of Igor tormenting the Monster with fire played in a screen. Guests would have to walk on a catwalk overlooking the whole laboratory while in 2006, pop out Vampire Bats would be on the sides.

Then guests made their way to a room in the Bates estate where the corpse of Mother Bates sat in her chair alongside various oldtrinkets . In 2006 it was a plain room where a statue of Vampire demon Verona sat atop of guests. Then guests would have to walk into a maze of mirrors, in 2006 various lines from Dracula and his brides would play while in 2007 the Psycho theme played and Mother bates would pop out in the middle section.

Another hallway followed this one, on 2006 a vampire baby would pop out behind a glass window with strobes, this was replaced in 2007 with a screen showing silhouetted zombies clawing at the presumed door, while the hallway was filled with hanging body bags, it was the morgue.

A projection screen displayed the Wolfman from Van Helsing as a silhoutte, 2007 replaced it with a scene from the classic 1941 film as a sequeway to the next scene. (2006 had a short hallway filled with small paintings).

Then guests would make their way down a dark forested path in the Wolfman Woods.

After a spinning tunnel themed to the Wolfman with pentagrams and symbols, guests got to see the large laboratory up close. Frankenstein’s monster was restrained on a gurney but he would break out of it to scare guests.

Finally the Wolfman gave guests one last scare before they left in 2006’s version.

Trivia[]

  • The huge electrical transformer centerpiece is a prop borrowed from the movie Van Helsing for it’s tie-in maze. It along with much of the laboratory section remained as Frankenstein’s Lab when the maze was revamped to a Classic Monsters theme in 2007.
  • 2006 featured a whole lot of unlicensed characters like Freddy and Michael, some who would appear in later years.
  • Weirdly, the lab section (since 2007) uses the music of a DRACULA film, specifically the one starring Frank Langella and Donald Pleasance, despite it being themed to Frankenstein.
  • The Wolf Man's forest is made up of fake trees and plants rescued from the E.T. Adventure queue area when it was removed.
  • John Murdy had made a cameo as the Frankenstein Monster's shadow in the attraction.
  • Chris & Murdy both had cameos as shadows of zombies in one scene of the attraction.
  • The Psycho section started with Mother Bates's Fruit Cellar which had a bunch of taxidermy animals, many of which were decommissioned animatronics from the queue line of the old ET ride.
  • Chucky’s Workshop had a bunch of inside jokes. The design team figured since Charles Lee Ray was stuck in the body of a doll, he’d take out his anger on other dolls. Famous ventriloquist dummies like Charlie McCarthy, Howdy Doody, and Mortimer Snerd appeared in this section.
  • The animatronic Phantom of the Opera figure was formerly a police officer in the E.T. Adventure attraction.
  • The Mummy section featured some authentic movie artifacts from The Mummy films, including the medallion from The Scorpion King which was later repurposed for The Collection Room scene in the Universal Monsters: Music by Slash maze.
  • The actual Masque of the Red Death outfit worn by Lon Chaney Sr. was featured in the attraction alongside the mask.
  • There was 9 different smell generators used in the attraction, Formaldehyde in the Mother room, Dirt in the Crypt room, Machine oil in Frankenstein's Lab, Pine Forest for the Wolfman room and Rot in the body bag room.
  • A bunny, an owl and woodpecker from the E.T. queue line was featured in the Mother's room.
  • The Wolfman in Van Helsing: Fortress Dracula was moved in 2007 to The Horror Make-Up Show in Universal Studios Florida and given a nickname “Eddie”.
