Description[]

Experience Halloween night like never before with Trick ‘r Treat, the anthology horror film from writer and director Michael Dougherty that has become a modern horror cult classic! It is said that Halloween is the night when horrifying creatures roam free, but there are rules devised to protect us from their evil. Every year, one small town is taught a terrifying lesson that some traditions are best not forgotten. Welcome to Warren Valley, Ohio a sleepy suburban community that masks many dark secrets. A bloodthirsty visitor has come to uphold the sacred traditions of Halloween and is itching to punish rule breakers with bloody acts of vengeance! When the tricks and treats of Halloween turn deadly, you must attempt to survive the scariest night of the year. You either live by the rules or you die by them.

Experience[]

Facade[]

The facade was Emma and Henry's House with all of the Halloween lights hung up and the sticks with sheets over them. A projection of Sam could be seen in the left window occasionally. Guests could see a tree with body parts hanging down. Guests then entered through the side of the house.

Haunted Maze[]

Guests entered into a room with all fences with text on one saying Season's Greetings and all of the stick figures with sheets in the scene. Guests were then scared by Sam covered in sheets. Emma would then scare guests before they exit the scene.

The Principal[]

Guests enter a black hallway with the text The Principal written on the wall in yellow. Guests would then enter a black hallway with a Sam black box boo hole scare.

Guests then approached Steven Wilkins on his porch sitting next to a static figure of Charlie throwing up. On the facade they were at was a window with a projection of Sam checking through his candy.

Guests then enter a black hallway with a Steven Wilkins black boo hole scare before exiting the section.

Surprise Party[]

Guests see more yellow text on a black wall this time being Surprise Party before then entering a series of black hallway boo hole scares by Sam and Steven Wilkins.

Guests then enter the woods where there were a bunch of mangled bodies and Laurie would pop out from behind a tree. Guests could see Sam sitting a tree next to Janet. Guests would then be scared by Janet before exiting the section.

The School Bus Massacre[]

Guests are immediately scared by the Vampire Kid from a boo hole as they see a static figure of Sam in the Quarry along with the school bus submerged in water with a Jack O'Lantern next to it. The Paper Bag Kid then pops out at guests as Vampire Kid pops out at guests again next to a static figure of Rhonda holding a Jack O'Lantern.

Meet Sam[]

Guests then see yellow text on a black wall saying Meet Sam before going down a black hallway with a black box boo hole scare from Sam.

Guests then approach Mr. Kreeg's House facade with the Jack O'Lanterns all around it as the Bunny Kid would pop out at guests. Guests would then enter the house.

Immediately as guests enter Mr. Kreeg would pop out from behind a door with a baseball bat. Guests would then see the staircase with candy on it. Guests then went down a hallway with a static figure of Sam upside down on the roof spraying water on guests.

Guests then went into Mr Kreeg's bedroom to see a flame out of a Jack-O-Lantern and a static figure of Mr Kreeg in bed. Sam would then pop out at guests from behind a window. Guests would then see all of the School Bus Massacre Kids as static figures behind a door.

Trick 'r Treat[]

Guests then saw one last black Wall with yellow text saying Trick 'r Treat as guests enter a series of black walls with black boo hole scares from Upside Down Princess Girl, Skeleton Kid, and Sam before guests then exit the maze.

Trivia[]

  • The Codename for this maze was "Samhain" [1].
  • Ten years ago, John Murdy met writer/director Michael Dougherty and discussed bringing his film Trick 'r Treat to Halloween Horror Nights. It took a decade (and they collaborated on Krampus in between) but they finally made the house [2].
  • Mike Dougherty was very involved with the making of this maze [3].
  • Murdy was holding out for this IP until an eventual sequel would be made, but it never came to be. The request from many fans wanting it at the event made him reluctantly agree, and thought this year was the right time for them to bring it to the event [4].
  • Michael Dougherty himself performed in the maze during closing weekend on one night as one of the School Bus Kids [5].
  • On Twitter, Murdy had a clue game for this house involving Terror in the Aisles, a 1984 horror/documentary film. He also gave a codename for the maze, "Olympics", and it had something to do with 1984, (Olympics in LA). Sam the Eagle was the mascot for those Olympics, Sam also being the main character in Trick'r Treat [6].
  • This maze featured three different houses from the movie, Henry & Emma's house, Principal Wilkins' house, and Mr. Kreeg's house. Murdy never recalls doing three facades in one maze while also adding a forest and a quarry as well [7].
  • As Murdy said, "We basically follow all the beats in the film– we do all the stories in the film. And to connect them together, we do a title sequence. So as you’re walking through the maze after each sequence, you’ll go into darkness and you’ll see there’s letters done exactly to the font of ‘Trick ‘r Treat’ that set up the name of each chapter of the movie” [8].
  • The facade for the maze was Henry and Emma’s house from the opening of the film and the team tried to capture all the details of his over the top home decor. This section of the maze and film reinforces the rule “Never blow out a Jack-O-Lantern” [9].
  • In the opening scene there was writing on the fences that said "Season's Greetings" which is a reference to a short that Michael Dougherty made that was a precursor to the film [10].
  • In the opening Scene, they had Sam pop out from under sheets like in the film [11].
  • They gave the performer playing Emma a special trigger that illuminated the Halloween lights strung around her body [12].
  • Sam's trigger before the Principal scene is the build in music from the beginning of the film (which is 4:35).
  • They took inspiration from how Orlando did Charlie in their Trick 'r Treat scarezone for their scene [13].
  • Charlie was a special figure they designed to spray “puke” all over the porch [14].
  • At the bottom of the staircase in the Principal section, guests can see all of the uncarved pumpkins that Principal Wilkins was going to carve.
  • Sam had cameos through out the maze, sometimes as a live performer, sometimes as a static figure & sometimes as a video projection which was created by a company called Atmos FX (it’s something you can actually buy) [15]
  • In the window of the Principal's house, guests could see opening his candy bag sorting through his candy, and throwing away all the healthy stuff [16].
  • Both Sam and Principal Wilkins's triggers in the black hallway before Surprise Party are the sound of a cat screeching
  • In the black hallway before Surprise Party, guests can hear Amy Joel's scream (from 28:44 in the film).
  • Principal Wilkins also moonlighted as this vampire character who they used to connects us to the next story in the maze [17].
  • In the film, people don't see the fully transformed werewolf until it's howling at the moon. There was a coffee table book that Mike Dougherty gave to Murdy that shows off the fully transformed Werewolf [18].
  • The “Princess Werewolves” were one of Murdy's favorite characters in the maze to recreate [19].
  • Rainbow's clown outfit from the Klownz scarezone could be seen at the "Surprise Party" scene in the maze.
  • The bonfire in the Surprise Party Scene had smoke coming out of it [20].
  • The Werewolf in the maze was reused from An American Werewolf in London.
  • The biggest set piece in the maze was for the “School Bus Massacre” scene. It involved a full size school bus partially submerged in real water. The bus was all fiberglass, even the tires but the water was only a couple inches deep in reality [21].
  • The way they did the submerged water effect was the same way they did it in La Llorona: La Cazadora de Niños.
  • The School Bus Massacre scene also had a static figure of Sam and Rhoda with her Jack-O-Lantern [22].
  • Bob who played Hollywood Harry played Mr. Kreeg in this maze [23].
  • When guests enter Mr. Kreeg's house and guests check out the stairs, there is a whole lot of fake candy brands, but also a picture of Kreeg from the film when he was the bus driver in the Halloween School Bus Massacre [24].
  • There are little details of the interior of Mr Kreeg’s house that help tell the story of who this guy is...the bottles and pills in his room. And also Sam’s presence with all the Halloween candy on the stairs [25].
  • The hallway scene featured an upside down Sam, now unmasked, crawling on the ceiling. This had a water blast effect operated by a performer off set [26].
  • Just before guests exited the maze, they recreated the tableau of the School Bus Massacre Kids showing up at Mr Kreeg’s door [27].
