The Wicked Growth: Realm of the Pumpkin was one of ten haunted houses that were featured during Halloween Horror Nights 30. It was located in Sprung Tent 2.

History and Location[]

For their 2020 Halloween Horror Nights event, Universal was planning to hold a haunted house based on classic Halloween traditions and customs all centered around an all new original character: The Pumpkin Lord. After Halloween Horror Nights was cancelled that year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Universal postponed the opening of this haunted house until the following year, though the Pumpkin Lord still appeared on a couple of the merchandise in 2020.

On August 12th, 2021, Universal announced that The Wicked Growth: Realm of the Pumpkin would be coming to Halloween Horror Nights that year. The house would be relatively unchanged from it's original plan in 2020. The codename for this house was "Oven".

In 2006, Universal built two hurricane-proof tents behind the World Expo area of the park specifically for holding Halloween Horror Nights haunted houses. This house would be located in the northernmost one (called Sprung Tent 2).

The house would prove to be very popular and went on to with the House of the Year award. The Pumpkin Lord would return the following year to become the icon. He would host his own scarezone that year called Horrors of Halloween.

Description[]

There’s no breaking free from the vines of the Pumpkin Lord, here to entrap you in his ever-growing evil.

An evil rot has taken root in the land. It’s time once again for the rise of the Pumpkin Lord who grows Halloween like a malignant vine. His minions are scouring the countryside, collecting unwilling sacrifices in order to summon the Pumpkin Lord.

  • The closer to Halloween, the more people practice the traditions, the greater the powers of the Pumpkin Lord grow.
  • As the pumpkins grow ever bigger, your fear grows ever greater, and your odds of escape grow smaller.
  • From the cemetery to the forest, there’s no breaking free from the tenacious vines of the merciless Pumpkin Lord.

Production Die-Ries[]

There's a reason that fat pumpkins, gnarly gourds and towering cornstalks have been a part of the bone-chilling Halloween stories since storytelling began - it is organic horror that emanates from below our very feet, drawing life from the earth through vein like vines, slowly growing stronger and stronger and ever more imposing. And thus, horrific faces are carved into the pulpy flesh of thick orange skin.

It is from the this time-honored legacy that HHN designers found inspiration to pay homage to all that has come before...with a new take on the legends, myths and fables. So step right in this re-imagined realm of slow growth wicked horror.

Experience[]

Queue and Facade[]

The queue entrance was located to the right of the Men in Black restrooms. It went down a road that led to the front of Sprung Tent 2 where it would then continuously loop around the side of the Men in Black building.

Eventually you would reach the facade which was 2 stands with pumpkins lined up and a tunnel lined up with pumpkins all around it. Guests would enter the tunnel and enter a long hallway with Jack O'Lanterns illuminating the pathway. At the end of the hallway was a advertisement for "Mr. Carver's Best Selection of Pumpkins Est. 1950". Guests would then enter the house.

Haunted House[]

Entering guests would immediately be attacked by a Skeleton from behind a fake fence panel. To the right of guests was corn and guests would approach a house facade with vines growing all over it.

Guests would enter and see the words Fear the Pumpkin Lord sprawled in blood on the wall. Guests would enter the dining room, smelling the dirt and rotten vegetation which surrounded them. They went around the dining table, on it was a person who had pumpkins growing out of him, as a Skeleton would attack from behind it.

Guests would then enter the kitchen where all of the pots and pans would start going off and moving as the sounds of cats running would play. A Skeleton would then pop out at guests as they are distracted.

Guests would then enter the Yard where on the right a Skeleton playing dead would pop out at guests through the fence. On the left were windows where a Skeleton would pop out at guests. That same Skeleton would pop out at guests. Guests would then see the Barn facade and enter.

Guests would go down a short hallway with a drop down panel and then be attacked by a Scarecrow through a boo hole. Guests would then approach the corpse of Nathaniel Crowe as he is being attacked by crows. He would scream and air effects would go off. Guests would go down a long hallway with 2 boo hole Scarecrow scares and one Scarecrow scare from above before guests exit the barn.

Guests then see a sign pointing them towards the covered bridge. Guests would then enter the bridge to see water projected underneath it. On the left through cracks in the bridge was the Headless Horseman moving along. Guests would then exit the bridge and be attacked by the Headless Horseman's head before then entering Caine Cemetery.

Inside Caine Cemetery was a bunch of pumpkins as a Grim Reaper would pop out at guests. There then was a scrim effect inside a door showing a woman inside of a coffin. All of the Jack O'Lanterns would go out and then light back up as a Grim Reaper pops out from a elevated crypt with fog and red lighting going off. From the opposite side of it another Grim Reaper would pop out at guests. Guests would then exit through the south exit of Caine Cemetery.

Guests would enter the Greenwood Forest where they could see windows illuminating light. Guests would then be attacked from a Goblin on a elevated boo hole platform. Guests would then be attacked by 2 Goblins (1 from the left, 1 from the right). Guests would then see the facade of Gramalkin's Hut and enter.

Inside was a bunch of ingredients gathered for the spell of summoning the Pumpkin Lord. There was a book with UV text as Gramalkin the Summoner greets guests entering. A burnt corpse would arise from the cauldron which Gramalkin The Summoner would then push back into the cauldron. Locasta would pop out while guests are distracted. Locasta would then pop out one more time for a 2nd scare. Guests would then exit Gramalkin's Hut.

Guests would then go underneath a pumpkin patch and enter The Pumpkin Lord's Lair where there are UV roots above guests. Guests would then be scared by a Sarlacc Pumpkin. Guests would then see the Pumpkin Lord grown out of a pumpkin greeting guests as he then burps on guests which was a water effect sprayed at guests. Guests would then be attacked by a Pumpkin Head Actor. Guests would then be attacked by a Jack O' Lantern Actor from a elevated platform before exiting the house.
