Description[]

Prepare to enter the macabre mind of The Weeknd in this haunted house as he stalks your squad through the surreal nightmare of his After Hours music. A slasher carving a smile at an otherworldly rave. Bandaged maniacs performing extreme plastic surgery. A grotesque mannequin masquerade. His nightmare is now yours.

Experience[]

Facade[]

The facade for the House was a giant vinyl record album with the cover being images from inside of the After Hours album. The Eyes of Abel on the Facade would Flicker when the Music distorts. Guests then enter the House.

Haunted House[]

As guests entered the house, they found themselves in a black transitional room with a red soundwave projection, as Die for You plays. They would turn into a white-tiled room with red lighting. The Weeknd could be seen strapped to a chair with a device strapped to his head and glowing colorful wires coming out of it, as he thrases around screaming in agony, eyes glowing red. TV monitors would also show disturbing images and the contents of his mind.

Guests entered into a hallway leading into the After Hours Club, with In Your Eyes playing, where masked and unmasked partygoers can be seen at every table. A window could be seen with a DJ jamming out to the music with a Dancing Woman on a stage ahead. Heading towards the stage where he is, guests were attacked by a Masked Clubgoer where a Dancing Woman would be greeted by Abel as the music distorts and he turns her around and cuts her throat. Another crystal skull mask clubgoer attacked from the left of the guests before exit the room.

Guests are transported into the backstage tunnels of the After Hours Club and enter another section of the room before being attacked by The Weeknd. In the next room, guests would be attacked by the In Your Eyes Woman with an axe.

After that, guests would enter a white brick wall room where a projection could be found of the In Your Eyes Woman with an axe as she quickly turns around and cuts The Weeknd's head off. Guests would see his head hit the ground. Next, guests would enter a darkened room which led to where The Weeknd's headless body could be seen on the ground. Before exiting, the In Your Eyes Woman could be seen holding his head up to guests screaming before they exit.

Guests then found themselves entering a bathroom, where Sacrifice would play. One of the Plastic Surgery Nurses can be seen preforming a grotesque version of liposuction on a victim, before guests were attacked by another from a bathroom stall on the right.

Guests then enter into a transitional room before going back into the bathroom, where they are attacked by one of the Plastic Surgery Nurses out of a stall on their left while another was on their right, holding the head of The Weeknd and placing it on a recent dead male stripper they had killed and created. Before guests exit the room, they were attacked by a headless body.

Guests then enter the After Hours Casino, To Late playing, passing by the sign and a slot machine before entering into the next room. They would then find themselves in a mirror maze with Blinding Lights playing, and mannequins of the Bandaged Maniacs in red sparkling suits, some of which would come to life. This would disorient guests before they exit the room.

Entering the After Hours Hotel, Save Your Tears will be playing, as guests would see the Weeknd on the stage, face deformed due to the plastic surgery, licking a toad. Once he does that, blacklight skulls are revealed on the walls, as two of the partygoers would take off their mask and jump out at guests, revealing their faces to be monstrous.

Guests will then enter into a hotel hallway, Heartless playing, as the walls distort and move. A pair of hands wil reach through a curtain on their right. As they continue, they would see a window on their left with the Weeknds eye peering from it, pupils turning into a toads, before turning around a corner and enter another hallway. Weeknd Toad would pop out at guests. They will then enter a small hallway, where a Camouflaged Humanoid in the red wallpaper would rip itself free from the wall and attack guests.

Guests were then transported into the After Hours Station, with Take my Breath playing. Seeing a map on the wall as they turn to their left corner, they would see a half-opened elevator where a half-eaten body could be seen pouring blood as a Weeknd Toad would lunge out of the elevator at guests. As guests rushed out of the room, they found themselves in a darkened hallway as a Weeknd Toad stiltwalker lunged at them on their left, leading them to rush into the next room where they are were scared by a subway flashing its lights at them.

Guests then entered the final room, which was a recreation of the first room but with the white tile walls bleeding and the room flickering red at times, as After Hours playe. Some of the Bandaged Maniacs could be found scattered around the room, one of the maniacs being near the now empty chair, as lights flash. Guests continued forward, before the wall to there left would distort and quickly show disturbing images of The Weeknd in bandages, as several of the maniacs lunge at you, before changing back to normal. Guests exit the house, with Blinding Lights playing.

Trivia[]

  • The victim in this announcement video is called The Selfie Queen.
  • Mike Aiello, Charles Gray, Chris Williams, and John Murdy all worked together on the concept of this house and scenes more than ever before [1].
  • Abel was very involved with the creation of the house[2].
  • According to John Murdy, “If you just hear ‘Blinding Lights’ on the radio, you really wouldn’t necessarily associate that with horror. So, this was about diving into the persona of the man who created it." [3].
  • Instead of rehashing the music videos, Murdy and Abel agreed it was more interesting to “tap into the essence” of the album[4].
  • The house is a third larger than the average Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood house, and was close to being the largest house they've ever done[5].
  • The six songs chosen for the house will be redone as a horror movie soundtrack [6].
  • According to Murdy, this house will have the most complex lighting programming Hollywood has ever done [7].
  • Mike Dean did the remixes for this house[8].
  • Back in March, Murdy teased that he wrote one of the grossest scenes for an HHN house. This is the house he was referring to [9].
  • The house has a visual inspiration from The Weeknd that comes film that inspired him such as A Clockwork Orange, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and Jacob's Ladder [10].
  • The house isn't a retelling of the album but nightmares through his songs with surrealistic and horrific imagery from his music videos featured[11].
  • The house is broken into three sections, preceded by an indoctrination into the performer's subconscious [12].
  • According to John Murdy, "Since it started with the album, I've always wanted to do this as a façade. I want to do a vinyl album of “After Hours,” open to the inner gatefold. The version we used for this happens to be the limited edition, white, blood-splattered vinyl version of the album. We decided to create The Weeknd's album cover giant-sized so that you're literally walking into the album. Above our heads on the catwalks are all these intelligent light fixtures hanging all over the place because the vibe we wanted to create when you come in here is that it's a party. For the casual fan who doesn't know The Weeknd like hardcore fans, that's precisely what they would expect. We wanted them to come here and go, 'What is this? How is this horror?' and then take it twisted." [13].
  • When the music distorts the queue, the soundstage turned red, and Abel's eyes began glow on the facade[14].
  • According to John Murdy, there was a scene inspired by A Clockwork Orange featuring The Weeknd strapped into a chair with a headset that is connected to different monitors. All the darkness going on inside his head that is creating this album is being sucked out, and the house shows these images flash subliminally, as if the whole thing is about to explode. All of that stuff that's getting pulled out of his head[15].
  • The beginning and ending scenes were inspired by the live performances done with Kenny G [16].
  • The In Your Eyes Nightclub scene had hookah-inhaling aliens and plates filled with hors d’oeuvres made of tiny fake bugs[17].
  • The Club scene had Abel peek in which is similar to the live performance of In Your Eyes with Kenny G. where he peeked into the box.
  • The Masked Partygoers in the After Hours Club scene wore the same mask worn by Patrick Greenway in the Super Bowl Halftime Performance and the Save Your Tears music video.
  • The After Hours Club scene had several reused masks from Exterminatorz and the Arachne mask from The Curse of Pandora's Box.
  • The audio trigger for the In Your Eyes Woman with the head is from The Haunting of Hill House.
  • The static figure of the girl in the liposuction scene was created by taking a fiberglass figure with silicone skin over it. They then cut out holes in the fiberglass, which allowed guests to see fat bubbling and being sucked out of the body [18].
  • The audio trigger for the Plastic Surgery Nurse with the buzzsaw is a stock scream sound effect [19].
  • The static figure that the Plastic Surgery Girl is sticking Abel's head onto is the guy from the Too Late music video.
  • The After Hours Casino had a W above it standing for Weeknd.
  • The Casino Slot Machine images were foreshadowing events that had happened in the house and those that were going to happen.
    • The exit sign being a reference to the Blonde Girl from In Your Eyes leaving the Club.
    • The Female Dancers being a reference to the Female Restroom scene.
    • The Male Dancers being a reference to the Male Restroom scene.
    • The Queen Card having the Plastic Surgery Girl on it as a reference to the Plastic Surgery Girls.
    • The microphone and martini glass being a reference to the Save Your Tears Club scene.
    • The frog being a reference to the Frog in the Save Your Tears scene.
    • The Skull Abel being a Reference to Abel at the end of the house.
  • The Mirror Section was inspired by the Super Bowl Half Time Show and the way it was lit was inspired by 2:31 in the Blinding Lights Music Video[20].
  • In the Save Your Tears Club, there was a UV outline of a Snake wrapping around the room when the lights flashed, which was a representation for Adam and Eve with the Frog being the Apple.
  • For the Hotel, Murdy and his team took inspiration from Vegas hotels’ notoriously gaudy interiors, exaggerating its hideous carpets and wallpaper prints to Kafkaesque heights [21].
  • The camouflaged people were a reused effect from American Horror Story.
  • For the Toad Abel, Murdy said, “In the music video, really briefly you see him lick this toad and then he looks at his hands and that’s as far as they go. We can go further. How much further? One scene sees a performer serenading a toad. Elsewhere, the Weeknd gradually transforms into a toad, with amphibian arms reaching out to scare guests until they eventually see a full-on, four-legged toad monster" [22].
  • The After Hours Station had a map filled with homages to songs by the Weeknd.
  • The elevator had the boyfriend from the In Your Eyes Music video scattered in bits.
  • The train scare had the words "After Hours" on it along with W on it standing for Weeknd.
  • The Skeleton Abel at the end of the house was a reference to the alternate cover for After Hours.
