The Shining (Hollywood) was one of the seven haunted mazes that was featured during Halloween Horror Nights 2017 (Hollywood). It was located in the Mummy Queue.

Description[]

Based on visionary director Stanley Kubrick's horror classic film, The Shining will let Halloween Horror Night guests experience all the iconic scenes and characters that have made the film a masterpiece of modern horror.

Welcome to The Overlook Hotel, a sprawling yet isolated century old hotel with a tragic history of murder and madness. Jack Torrance, a man with a troubled past, has agreed to be the caretaker for The Overlook Hotel during the harsh Colorado winter and has moved his family into the shuttered hotel. But as soon as the Torrance family takes up residence in the hotel, Jack begins to undergo a startling change...a descent into madness that will put his family in grave danger.

Unbeknownst to Jack, his young son, Danny, is imbued with a dark gift - the ability to see events and people, both past and future, that others can't see. A gift called "The Shining." Danny's nightmarish visions will help to unlock the mysteries of the haunted hotel and allow the horrifying, true nature of The Overlook to reveal itself.

Experience[]

Facade[]

The facade was the Overlook Hotel Hedge Maze. Outside was the map of the Overlook Hotel and narration played detailing the job Jack took at the Hotel. Guests entered the Hedge Maze before turning right.

Haunted Maze[]

Guests entered a black room before turning left into a black hallway with a door with light peering through. The words "Redrum" were written on the door in red.

Then, guests would enter the Colorado room where there were two long pillars with photos of guests from the Overlook Hotel. In between the pillars was a projection of Jack typing on his typewriter and then slowly loosing his sanity.

Guests would then be attacked by Jack Torrance from an elevated platform with an axe and then enter a hallway with paper on the walls saying "All Work and No Play Makes Jack a Dull Boy". At the end of the hallway, Jack Torrance would attack guests with an axe from a drop down wall window.

Guests would then enter a hallway where a static figure of Danny on his tricycle could be seen at the end of the hall. In front of him was a projection of the Grady Twins which would change from them standing together to showing their corpses.

Guests would then enter a series of hallways with the carpet from the film and doors leading up to Room 237. Jack Torrance would pop out from behind a door with an axe before guests entered the Room 237 Bathroom.

Inside the Room 237 Bathroom was a projection of Lorraine Massey behind a shower curtain cleaning herself and humming "Midnight with the Stars and You". Guests would then enter a short hallway with a curtain in front from which Lorraine Massey would pop out. Guests would then enter the Room 237 Bedroom where Lorraine Massey would pop out from the far right corner of the room.

Then, guests would enter a black hallway where Jack Torrance would pop out at them from a boo-hole. Guests would then enter a hallway leading up to the Gold Room.

In the hallway was a small area on the left from which the Bear Creature would pop out with a shaker can. At the end of the hallway, Horace M. Derwent would appear via a Pepper's Ghost effect and greet the guests before disappearing. Guests would then enter the Gold Room.

In the Gold Room was a bunch of tables with Undead Party Revelers. There were two Undead Male Party Revelers in the scene and one Undead Female Party Reveler who would pretend to be fake before jumping out with shaker cans. Guests would then enter the elevator scene.

The elevator scene had blood splattered all over the furniture and a projection switching between the Elevator, the Twins, and the Redrum Door.

Guests would then enter a black hallway where Jack Torrance would pop out with an axe and then guests would enter the bathroom scene.

In the bathroom scene was Wendy Torrance with a knife in the corner reacting to Jack Torrance tearing down the door with his axe. He would say "Here's Johnny" and reach in. Wendy would then hit him with her knife as he screamed.

Guests exited the scene and went into another black hallway with Jack Torrance popping out from a boo-hole with an axe before entering Dick Hallorann's death scene.

In Dick Hallorann's death scene was a mannequin of Dick Hallorann dead on the ground as Jack Torrance popped out from the right with an axe. Guests would exit the scene and then re-enter the Hedge Maze.

The Hedge Maze was covered in snow as guests heard Jack screaming for Danny. Jack Torrance would pop out from the left with an axe. Then, guests would enter a series of black hallways with three Jack Torrance scares before seeing Jack frozen with his axe as "Midnight and the Stars with You" played. Guests would then exit the maze.

Trivia[]

  • The codename for this maze was "Charles" [1].
  • Murdy did the voice-over for the audio in the facade and for Jack in the maze. The voiceover for Danny was the sound designer's son [2].
  • James Franco and Chris Bauer both portrayed Jack Torrances in the maze one night [3].
  • The challenge was to recreate the iconic visuals of Kubrick’s film but in a live experience. And it all starts with Overlook Hotel [4].
  • How to recreate the vast exterior of the Overlook hotel? You can’t & to try & scale it down would just be silly so they focused on the hedge maze as the bookend for the maze. Wendy Torrance tours it in the beginning of the film and it also features in the climax so it made sense [5].
  • Murdy did hours and hours of visual research for this film, which is difficult for older films that don’t have as much photo documentation. But luckily found amazing pics of the sign and asked our prop team to recreate the sign outside the Hedge Maze exactly [6].
  • On the Sign there were many small details such as...
    • The text describing the hedge maze...and the rules for navigating it [7].
    • Some information on the Overlook Hotel [8].
    • And the event schedule for the Overlook. They didn’t have reference for the actual text for this so the prop team had a bit of fun with it [9].
  • Once guests got past the intro hedge section, it goes surreal with the infamous “redrum door.” This was to try & capture Danny’s visions in the film. Many sections of the maze were surreal [10].
  • Once guests entered the Overlook, they saw a shadow projection of Jack furiously typing away and then freaking out, getting the axe etc. This was to condense the action of the film (which you have to do in a maze) to show Jack’s decent into madness [11].
  • Murdy played Jack Torrance in the projection video [12].
  • For the final product of the projection video they ghosted in a background of the Overlook ballroom to give it more dimension [13].
  • The Details needed to be right for the Interior of the Overlook Hotel. The light fixtures, a little but important detail to capture the feel. The photographs needed to also capture that vibe and eluded to the New Year’s Eve party that factors in later [14].
  • The next scene was a surreal interpretation of Jack’s decent into madness. Murdy was thinking of how they could show that visually and he focused in on the pages he types with “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” [15].
  • The Art Department recreated the pages exactly the way they appear in the film with all the crazy variations. Obviously no one had the opportunity to sit there and read them all but even the typing mistakes were accurate to the film [16].
  • Everything up to this point has been set up, a slow burn like the film. That was all by design [17].
  • The maze alternated between surreal scenes representing Danny’s visions or Jack’s descent into madness with literal recreations of the film like the Twins scene. This was all done with Pepper’s Ghost. The twins were cut outs/prints & the bodies dimensional both were reflected on glass [18].
  • They designed three different carpet designs from the film and had them manufactured for the maze [19].
  • One day Murdy went through & the “2” from Room 237 was missing. He thought someone stole it until he found out Chris had them removed because they weren’t enough like the ones in the film. He replaced them all [20].
  • Room 237 was a two part scene. It started with the bathroom and a shadow projection of a beautiful woman (an audio/video crew member Murdy filmed for this scene) taking a shower. This was an interpretation of what Jack first sees in the room [21].
  • In the Bathroom scene, Lorraine Massey in the projection is humming "Midnight with the Stars and You".
  • Then there’s the dead lady in Room 237 and she’s naked in the film so they had to alter this one considerably, using a dye sublimation printed body suit [22].
  • Then it’s the homage to the ghosts of the masquerade ball party. The guy in the Bear Suit was a jump scare in the scene and the “great party” guy in the tux was a scrim screen reveal [23].
  • The Gold Room is a “one of these things is not like the other” scene and a brief part of the film but they really wanted to take guests into that environment [24].
  • Then there’s another trip into the surreal, the blood elevator. The room itself was realistic with tons and tons of scenic blood (which when applied is bubble gum pink till it dries) and the video represents Danny’s vision, alternating between the elevator, twins & redrum door [25].
  • Leaving the elevator, guests are cast into total darkness which is a set up for one of the many attacks by Jack with the axe [26].
  • The axe was attached to a rig behind the door so the performer could mime as if he was chopping thru it. The actor playing Jack would do the chops, put his face in the door crack for the line and then reach his hand thru before Wendy swipes at it with the knife & he recoils [27].
  • In the Here's Johnny Scene, there was a ledge of snow outside the window [28].
  • The final sequence in the maze returns guests to the lobby of the Overlook where they discover Halloran’s body and get attacked by Jack again [29].
  • The finale had a 5 Ton HVAC System [30].
  • Murdy has said the maze was originally much larger and detailed with the major cut being Hedge Maze at the end. It was stated that it was supposed to be three times longer [31].
  • The maze ends with the tableau of Frozen Jack [32].
  • Due to an inability to get the license to Jack Nicholson's likeness, the masks were designed to not exactly mirror his face, and the frozen Jack figure at the end had to be modified for looking too much like him.
