The Mummy Returns: The Curse Continues was one of the five haunted houses that was featured during Halloween Horror Nights XI. The house was based on Universal's The Mummy Returns film. It was located at the Earthquake Queue along with Run.

History and Location[]

In the year 2001, a sequel to the 1999 Mummy film was released with the name, The Mummy Returns. Originally, Universal was going to build a haunted house titled The Mummy Returns: Temple of Terror during Halloween Horror Nights XI.

However, due to the 9/11 terror attacks, Universal changed the name of the house to The Mummy Returns: The Curse Continues as the word terror was an inappropriate word to use at the time. Despite these changes, the actual haunted house seemed to have not been changed at all.

The house would be one of two haunted houses located in the large extended queue for the Earthquake attraction that year, the other being Run.

Description[]

Based on the hit movie! Venture through a maze of tomblike corridors and dark caverns in the Temple of The Scorpion King, where danger lurks around every corner.

Concept[]

The original concept for The Mummy Tombs of Terror before the name change.

The maze is filled with tomb corridors, dark caverns and an unstable temple, where danger lurks in every step. The guest encounters the newly discovered temple of the Scorpion King. Your presence has regenerated the evil mummified priest (Im-Ho-Tep) which sets in motion the destruction of this world. You need to escape but the journey is filled with cobwebbed corridors of darkness.

Experience[]

Queue and Facade[]

The map seemingly shows the entrance of this house being to the left of the entrance for Beetlejuice's Graveyard Revue. The queue would go through the queue of the Earthquake attraction. The facade was the entrance to the Scorpion King's temple.

Haunted House[]

After entering the facade, guests would be greeted with a metal statue. The house apparently had many different scareactors hiding behind lush walls. One grassy wall held a sarcophagus that would lean forward to attack guests. There were also many mummies and pharaohs that would chase guests around the house. There were also reportedly moving floors. According to this, there was a collapsing walls room and scareactors coming from above. At the end of the house, a 7 foot tall Sphinx character would attack guests.

The house seemed to end with the Pygmy forest scene.

Trivia[]

  • The house was originally supposed to be called The Mummy Returns: Temple of Terror, but this was changed as part of a major tone-down of the event due to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
  • According to this, someone lit a lighter in the house to try and have more light when going through the house. This resulted in an expensive piece of audio equipment getting damaged and the shutdown of the house for one night.
