Description[]
Shriek through two Blumhouse masterpieces. Face a frantic teen and a serial killer who’ve swapped bodies in Freaky. Then in the terrifying The Black Phone you’ll find yourself kidnapped by The Grabber.
Step inside a new double-feature of Blumhouse horror. Your scream squad will find yourselves trapped between a frantic teen and the ruthless serial killer she’s swapped bodies with in Freaky. Then, you’ll try to make a desperate escape from the dark basement of The Grabber before you become his latest victim in the terrifying The Black Phone.
“The Horrors of Blumhouse” will transport guests into an alternate dimension where the scares are real and the stakes are life or death. In The Black Phone, which hits theatres June 24, “The Grabber” is a demented magician best known for his sinister trick of making people disappear – permanently. Guests will find themselves trapped in his “fun” house where the sound of ghostly voices whisper hints on how to escape, but guests must tread carefully to outwit and outrun “The Grabber’s” twisted magic. Freaky will challenge guests to outrun serial killer “The Butcher” who has switched bodies with a high school girl after being cursed by The La Dola Dagger, an ancient Aztec blade. Guests will learn firsthand that looks can be deceiving as they encounter the sweet-looking teen who is actually “The Butcher” – and she is determined to hunt for their next victims.
Backstory[]
An abandoned strip mall with condemned signage, graffiti tags, and a video store appeared called Blumhouse Video, a horror movie HQ that's open one night a year. It only rents horror movies and, two in particular: Freaky and Black Phone, with both films being displayed in each window with their own video tape packages displayed.
Experience[]
Facade[]
The facade was the outside of the Blumhouse Video Store. Alongside the facade was a fence with missing kid posters and a logo for the Abracadabra Company. Guests would see the posters for Freaky and The Black Phone on both sides of the facade along with VHS tapes of both films. On the left was a TV that played trailers and advertisements from both films. Guests then entered the house.
Haunted House[]
Upon entering, guests would see the logo of Freaky on the wall with the dagger underneath it. Guests then entered a black room with Wednesday the 11th written on the wall. They would then enter the mansion from the movie and saw a mask missing from a wall full of masks and the La Dola Dagger missing from its case. Guests were then attacked by the Blissfield Butcher from behind a wall.
Next, guests would go down a hallway to see Ginny hanging on the wall impaled by a spear. The Blissfield Butcher attacked guests from behind a curtain on the right. Guests then went down a hallway to see Isaac with a wine bottle in his throat which spewed water at guests. Entering a bathroom on the right at the end of the hallway, guests would find the corpse of Sandra as the Blissfield Butcher then attacked them.
Guests then entered a black room with Thursday the 12th written on the wall. They would enter the Football Stadium where the walls disappeared to show the Blissfield Butcher stabbing Millie in the shoulder. After that, they would enter Millie's Room with projection effects and a head full of pins. They then entered the Butchers Lair and saw Millie in Bed looking at her hands. The Blissfield Butcher popped out at the sound of an alarm, yawning before screaming.
Then, guests entered a black room with Friday the 13th written on the wall before entering the school. Guests passed by lockers as Millie popped out at them with a knife. Guests then entered the classroom to see Millie push Mr. Bernardi into a sawblade. She then popped out at guests holding a screwdriver. Entering the Old Mill, guests would find three dead highschoolers. Millie popped out with a chainsaw on the left and the Blissfield Butcher popped out with a knife on the right. Guests then entered a black room where Millie popped out from a boo-hole with a chainsaw.
Guests then entered a hallway with missing child posters on the wall. They then saw a curtain with a black phone on it and a black phone on the right of it. The Grabber then popped out from behind the curtain. Guests entered the Grabber's House through the living room. They saw all of Max's detective work on the right. The Grabber then popped out at guests from the right with his hunting knife. They would then enter the kitchen where the Grabber could be seen sleeping on a chair. He would wake up and scare guests.
Going down a hallway, guests would be startled by Samson popping out of an air vent. Guests then entered the basement where they would find Max dead and a static figure of Finney could be seen answering the phone. The Grabber popped out at guests with an axe. After that, guests would go down various hallways with three Grabbers popping out from boo holes. Guests then went down a black hallway to exit the house.

Trivia[]
- They did 2 films instead of 3 this time because both films had a lot of content that they wanted to explore so needed more time/space for that [1].
- The challenge with Freaky that made Murdy want to take it on was trying to pay off both the comedy and the horror[2].
- Murdy saw The Black Phone several months before the official release of the movie to plan for this house [3].
- Murdy provided his voice for The Grabber and The Blissfield Butcher in the house. [4].
- Murdy had met Vince Vaughn sometime in 2008 on the backlot working on The Bates Motel Studio Tour scene. [5].
- There are environments from the films in this house that are done a bit differently [6].
- According to Murdy, The Grabber's van was originally featured in one version of the treatment for the house [7].
- This house had been rewritten three times since the films are so plot driven, so it was hard to communicate their stories visually and there were plenty of scenes that Murdy wanted to do but couldn't fit in [8].
- The facade for Horrors of Blumhouse was completely changed since the previous versions [9].
- The Creative Team were trying to figure out what to do as the facade due to the available height of Waterworld. The facade used was an idea mentioned by Art Director, Chris Williams, as a joke comment and Murdy said "That's Brilliant!" [10].
- The Horrors of Blumhouse (Hollywood 2017) and The Horrors of Blumhouse: Chapter Two both took place in a movie theater or film festival. This facade, due to the location and the running joke between John Murdy and Chris Williams was made into a video store. [11].
- John Murdy liked the concept of having the facade be a video store based on his own experiences working at video stores through his high school and college years. He liked the nostalgic style video pop ups such as Slashback Video and so forth that bring back that classic idea in the mainstream. [12].
- The facade has the number 1031 on it which was supposed to be a reference to October 31st/Halloween.
- The logo of the Blumhouse Video store facade is in blacklight paint because Murdy and co. wanted to create a hellish looking neon sign. [13].
- There were VHS packages for both Freaky and Black Phone that would be displayed in the facade windows. [14].
- The idea for the video store is that it's a portal to hell with red smoke and UV light coming out. Once guests entered the video store they're immediately transported into the films. [15].
- The life-like posters concept from the 2017 & 2018 mazes returned for this house, albeit with a little artistic license [16].
- The Freaky title card had a special effect with the ancient La Dola Dagger which eye starts to glow red during the narration [17].
- The La Dola Dagger in the house was made from the molded screen used prop from the film[18].
- According to Murdy, part of the challenge with Freaky was that the story is kind of complicated to explain in the context of a haunted house, so throughout the house they had come up with visual ways with the switching bodies, story, and the curse [19].
- What Murdy found amusing in Freaky was the use of title cards "Wednesday the 11th, Thursday the 12th, and Friday the 13th" in the film. Guests would pass by these in each room [20].
- Murdy wanted to start the house with a comedic tone since Freaky is a comedy horror film and is such a diametric compared to the tone from The Black Phone later in the house [21].
- Originally the wine bottle victim effect was done with an effect controlled by a performer with a guttural sound of the victim as you are sprayed with "Blood and Wine", but it was changed and tasked by engineers to do the effect with sensors and IR which are typically used on rides and has not been done before in the haunted houses. A little sensor in Isaac's death scene causes a horrendous sound effect and huge blast compressed air hidden in the room giving you thought that Isaac had puked all over you [22].
- Many of the props featured in the house are either from an offside facility, purchased, or made by the team [23].
- After exiting out of the scene of the mansion, another title card sets up the next day and had guests walking outside of the football stadium with a concrete look that disappeared, using the disappearing room effect that had been done recently last year in The Haunting of Hill House (Haunted Maze Hollywood) during Halloween Horror Nights 2021 (Hollywood) and Freddy vs. Jason (Hollywood) during Halloween Horror Nights 2016 (Hollywood)[24].
- They tried to cast a lot of tall actors and ones of a general resemblance to the characters, most notably The Blissfield Butcher [25].
- According to Murdy, another challenge in making the house was the switching bodies scene with no dialogue, inspired by a one second montage in the film in Millie's nightmare sequence in her bedroom, the scene would transition into a scene where guests are placed into The Blissfield Butcher's Lair featuring Millie's bed in it [26].
- Also, in the scene Millie's alarm clock goes off, guests also entered through a 50x50 mirror and placed in between both Millie and Butcher screaming at each other [27].
- The next day sequence, which is Friday the 13th, featured the killer as Millie, but to work in the comedic aspect in the scene, they incorporated in the attack and retreat for the scareactors. For example, in this scene Millie attacks you and then retreats she says "I can't wait to kill you" repeatedly[28].
- The classroom next to the woodshop scene is the Spanish class, a reference to Senora Cayennes who explains the Dagger process.
- The wood shop scene was made with mechanical engineering and was made to be easier for the scareactor who played Millie to take the body installed split and splay open [29].
- Murdy went through 20,000 pictures and pulled all the pictures, signage, and scenic pieces from the wood shop scene and had them recreate it right out of the film right down to the bird houses that had been bought [30].
- A picture from the 70s of John Murdy as an altar boy was featured as a lost kid on the missing posters for The Black Phone[31].
- According to Murdy, they liked the idea how the Grabber's masks would change depending on his moods, so they had their makeup artist recreate masks with removable pieces, so every time guests see the Grabber with a different version of mask [32].
- In the living room, there is all of Max's detective work on the kids and speculation theories about the Grabber.
- A similar effect to An American Werewolf in London haunted maze during Halloween Horror Nights 2014 would be used with Samson as a puppet breaking through an air vent in the room [33].
- In the basement scene guests could see a Finney's tray of food is very similar to what he has in the movie [34].
- The trailers for both films would play on the TV in the window of the facade and in between the house logo would flash.
