The Haunting of Hill House was one of the haunted mazes that were featured during Halloween Horror Nights 2021 (Hollywood). It was located in Curious George Tent 1.

Description[]

Welcome to Hill House, a structure more alive than its ghostly inhabitants. Inside these walls echo the haunted footsteps of those trapped here for all time.

Halloween Horror Nights is back with a vengeance, including a terrifying maze featuring Netflix’s supernatural masterpiece, The Haunting of Hill House. Each room, each hallway, takes you deeper and deeper into the nightmarish terror.

Step right into Netflix’s supernatural masterpiece, The Haunting of Hill House. The nerve-fraying tension builds as the long-dead (and more recently dead) inhabitants lunge from the shadows. Prepare to come face to face with The Tall Man, The Bent-Neck Lady, The Ghost in the Basement and more.

Facade[]

The facade for this maze was the logo for The Haunting of Hill House. The windows in the logo would flash red periodically. Guests would walk through a hole at the bottom of the logo and enter the maze.

Haunted Maze[]

Once guests walked through the facade, they would find themselves inside the halls of Hill House. As they turned right, they could see a projection of The Bent-Neck Lady on the wall in front of them. As they walk towards it to continue down the hall, it would fade away. Continuing into another corridor, guests would see the ghost of Olivia Crain beckoning guests to come forward. Passing through doors with knobs that turned and shook by themselves, guests would be startled by The Bent-Neck Lady in front of them.

Next, guests would enter the living room, where they could see Nell laying on the couch as The Bent-Neck Lady hovered over her. This would serve as a distraction as The Bent-Neck Lady attacked guests on the right. Going down another corridor, guests would be attacked by William Hill, who popped out from behind the top of a door.

After that, guests would enter Nell and Luke’s bedroom. Thunder flashed through the windows while the sound of children’s screams could be heard. William Hill scared guests to the left, while The Bent-Neck lady startled guests as they exited the room. Going back into a hallway, guests would see a wall disappear in front of them with a young Poppy Hill walking back and forth behind it. This served as a distraction, as an old and decrepit version of Poppy Hill would jump out at guests from behind.

Guests would now enter a room full of statues, where lightning would strike outside the windows. This led guests into the basement of the house, which consisted of walls covered in sheets. A crack in the wall on the right allowed guests to see the skeletal remains of William Hill. This served as a distraction, as The Ghost in the Basement would attack guests from above the crack. Continuing through the basement, guests would enter a room full of barrels and see the dumbwaiter flashing.

After going through some more halls, guests would find themselves in the Red Room, where Olivia would beckon guests to drink some poisoned tea. The wall behind her would disappear, revealing a couple of static-figures of ghosts. The body of Abigail could also be seen next to the table.

Exiting the room, guests would find themselves in another darkened hallway, where they encounter a couple of Bent-Neck Lady scares, as well as a disappearing wall showing the hanging body of The Bent-Neck Lady. Reaching the end, guests would find themselves in a room with a grandfather clock, before being scared by William Hill from above. Guests would then exit the maze.

  • According to John Murdy, the process for the maze and working with Netflix was similar to his working with Guilermo Del Toro on Crimson Peak: Maze of Madness during Halloween Horror Nights 2015 (Hollywood). With it being more focused on Atmosphere [1].
  • Murdy believed that the show elevated the horror genre and that's why he wanted to bring it to the event [2].
  • This house was planned for 2020 and redesigned a few times but not due to creative reasons [3].
  • Murdy believes this to be the most detailed maze of 2021 [4].
  • They wanted the maze like the series to be a slow burn. Progressively ramping up as you go along [5].
  • Murdy wanted to do the morgue scene but it was scrapped due to it not fitting the house setting [6].
  • Mike Flanagan visited the maze and mentioned that “it felt like [he] was stepping back onto the set of the show" [7].
  • The scrim effects in the maze are meant to replicate the shows transitions between past and present events at Hill House [8].
  • They used HVAC to blow cold air on the back of your neck and to help set the mood in the beginning of the house [9].
  • A challenge of this specific maze was some of the characters, like the Bent Neck Lady. They couldn’t ask an actor to do that themselves for seven hours, so they had to come up with a way to create that effect. The way they did the Bent Neck Lady is that the actress will be wearing an artificial head with a severely broken neck and a black ninja hood that is the same background as the material she’ll be standing against [10].
  • In the audio they wanted signs that the house is haunted. The dogs barking, the rain and thunderstorm with hail hitting the window, and pounding on the walls. [11].
  • Another challenge was the wallpaper, Murdy states "A big part of dealing with this maze actually came down to the wallpaper. The wallpaper is really specific in this show, so we wanted to [replicate that]. The more I stare at it, the more faces I see.” [12].
  • To represent the present vs the past, in one of the maze hallways, it looks like guests are in the past when the house is all fixed up. And then, the entire wall disappears and guests see Poppy and they're in the present where the walls have vines growing on them [13].
  • The disappearing wall effect was from Insidious: Return to the Further.
  • For the statue room, the creative team weren’t able to turn to their own prop house facility because they didn’t have anything that looked the specific way they needed it to. As a result, they had to have everything sculpted [14].
  • One of the statues in the statue room is from La Llorona: Villa de Almas Perdidas [15].
  • The production team had nailed down the tiniest details in the maze such as the print of the wallpaper to the bottles of rat poison used in the ninth episode [16].
  • The maze comes full circle with you trying to get into the Red Room but can't and then at the end you enter the Red Room.
  • Nell's cup of stars is in the Red Room. [17].
  • The creative team figured out a way to do the hidden ghosts. Using a theatrical scrim, a wall that becomes transparent if lit from the right angle, there is a moment in the haunt where guests were be surrounded by the many spirits that live in this dusty old mansion [18].
  • In the maze you see both Olivia Crain and Poppy Hill's normal looks and their decayed Looks [19].
  • Murdy said he loved the show’s slow burn approach and how you feel for the family at the center of the story, while pointing out, “In a maze, you’re condensing all those many hours of television down into a walkthrough experience. So you get those moments of sadness, like Abigail dead on the floor, poisoned by the rat poison, or Nell after she’s hung herself – or had help, depending on your interpretation — but the focus is on being scary"[20].
  • The ending was originally supposed to have Nell hanging from the spiral staircase but it was cut due to spacing [21].
