The First Purge was one of the eight haunted mazes that was featured during Halloween Horror Nights 2018 (Hollywood). It was located in the Metro Sets.

Description[]

Get ready for The First Purge, a terrifying new maze that tells the story of how the blockbuster franchise all began. The New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) have instituted the inaugural Purge, a 12-hour period on Staten Island, where all crimes, including Murder, are legal. Try to survive the NFFA’s experiment and make it through the night. Your government thanks you for your participation!

Experience[]

Facade[]

The facade was a burned out strip of Staten Island. The street included buildings such as "Ka$h Pro", "DT Liquors", and a Purge psychologist station. There was also Anti-Purge graffiti all over the facade and on the ground, and burnt dolls around the facade. Guests would enter the maze.

Haunted Maze[]

Guests would go down a hallway with two static Purgers with UV eye contacts at the end behind a fence. There, a Red Bag Head Purger pretending to be fake next to the two static Purgers and would pop out at guests.

Guests would then enter Skeletor's lair where there was a static man on a bed who was dead. There were holes in the wall and Skeletor popped out from behind a door. Guests would exit the lair and go down a hallway to enter the next scene.

The next scene was a warehouse with red lighting and a bunch of old department store mannequins tagged by Purgers. In the scene you could hear an alarm and whispering. There would be three Mannequin Purgers hiding among the mannequins that would pop out at guests. Guests would then exit the scene.

Guests would then go down a long hallway where a Girl on a swing could be seen humming "God Bless America" behind a fence at the end. While guests were distracted, Skeletor would pop out from behind a door on the right.

Guests would then go down a series of black hallways before a Purger with a machete would pop out at them from a boo-hole. Guests would then enter a block party where there was a mannequin of a guy in a bull mask and some dead bodies by him. The lighting would flash from purple to green while a Purger would pop out on the left and Skeletor would pop out on the right. Guests would then exit the scene.

Guests would then go into a scene where above them were static figures of the old ladies with explosives. While guests were distracted, the Teeth Mask Purger would pop out from the left at guests with a machete.

Guests would then enter the outside of the Park Hill Towers Apartment Complex, where there were flashing lights and static figures of Gas Mask Purgers behind fences. Among them were two real actors that would pop out at guests with knives. Guests would then enter the apartment.

Inside the apartment was General Smiley behind a desk with a Purge Victim. He would slice the throat of the victim which would spew water at guests. Next to him was a TV monitor of what was going on during the Purge.

Guests would then enter a small room where a Smiley Soldier Purger would pop out with a knife. Then, guests would go down a long hallway with doors where one Smiley Soldier Purger would pop out from one door on the left and another on the right.

Guests would then enter a living room with a TV showing news footage on the Purge. The living room was in dismay as a Smiley Soldier Purger would pop out in front of guests. On a table there was a bomb blinking that guests would hear explode. As soon as it went off, Skeletor would pop out at guests from behind the door next to it.

Guests would then go down a long series of black hallways with a distorted version of "God Bless America" playing. Three Skeletors would pop out at guests from boo holes in the hallways. Guests would then exit the maze.

  • With the property being the highest rated and requested property by many who attend HHN and take surveys, they decided to bring back the franchise with its own maze [1].
  • The First Purge house was a the first standalone house based on The Purge, after it had been used for scarezones, a Terror Tram, Gauntlet & a part of The Horrors of Blumhouse [2].
  • Murdy was involved with this film when Blumhouse had sent drafts of the script which had new characters and environments which they look for in a maze [3].
  • In some countries in the world, The Purge is known by a different name...”American Nightmare” and that’s the inspiration behind this maze. How would it feel to navigate a hellish urban environment where everyone is out to get guests [4].
  • The facade was a burned strip of the inner city [5].
  • The facade was a mixture of a burned out industrial building (seen at 48:16), DT Liquors, and Ka$h Pro (seen at 34:46 and 43:21).
  • The facade had a lot of visual storytelling with the the Purge psychologist station with propaganda videos, anti Purge graffiti on the buildings & burned out dolls on the ground that eluded to the old ladies & their improvised explosives [6].
  • Stepping inside, guests discovered a burned out industrial building that is the lair of Skeletor [7].
  • In Skeletor's lair, guests can see a static figure of a dead man on Skeletor's bed. It's seen very briefly in the film (30:17 in the film).
  • The other masks in the maze have to look like they were something someone made at home [8].
  • When Murdy first read the script for “The First Purge,” one scene that immediately caught his eye was this room filled with old department store mannequins that had been “tagged” by Purgers. He immediately saw the scare potential for a maze scene [9].
  • Another scene in the script that caught Murdy's eye was a drugged out girl slowly swinging back & forth in the warehouse. This wasn’t a scare per se but it was extremely unsettling. They had thought about doing it with a static figure but it was far creepier with a live performer [10].
  • In the warehouse hallway with the Swinging Girl, guests can hear Skeletor whistling (in the film it's at 38:51).
  • Originally, the alleyway with the people with the UV eye contacts staring out the windows was going to be in the maze after the Swinging Girl scene [11].
  • One of the reoccurring elements in the maze was the physical evidence of all of the violence taking place [12].
  • The Rave Party Victims don't look like Skeletor's Victims in the film but are instead people from the Rave Party scene who weren't killed. One of them is visible at 36:21.
  • Another element they wanted to communicate was the political propaganda taking place for people to support the Purge [13].
  • In the Rave Party scene, the Rave Party Purger on the left is in the film at 41:20.
  • In the explosives hallway, guests can hear Skeletor laughing (in the film it's 28:59).
  • The finale section of the maze replicated the attack on the Park Hill Towers, a low income apartment complex under siege by a horde of Purgers [14].
  • The Gas Mask Purgers were not in the film but are visible in the trailer for the film at 2:02 [15].
  • The facade of the Park Hill Towers had to be located near the center line of the tent as that is its tallest point [16].
  • Inside the Park Hills Towers, guests saw The Purge Leader slit the throat of one of its inhabitants right before their eyes. This was a scene not present in the film.
  • The sound effect of the Female Victim in the Park Hills Towers is from the Rave Party Scene at 41:30.
  • The C4 doesn't have a timer in the film so they added it as a aspect of Skeletor's trigger in the apartment room.
  • All of Skeletor's triggers are actually from the Teeth Mask Purger (52:17 and 52:44 in the film).
