Halloween Horror Nights IV was the first year to introduce a "scarezone", a name given to specific outdoor areas that feature theming and costumed characters with the intent of scaring people who walk through the areas. To get to certain areas of the park, it is necessary to travel through these scarezones.
Scarezone have subsequently reappeared at every Halloween Horror Nights Orlando event since then, either as multiple fixed scarezones, a single park-wide scarezone or as at Halloween Horror Nights 22 a number of roaming scarezones.
Scarezones were first introduced to Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood in 2000. They have appeared there in their fixed form until Halloween Horror Nights 2016 (Hollywood) when Hollywood received their first park-wide scarezone, based on The Purge: Election Year.
Scarezones have been featured at Halloween Horror Nights Singapore and Halloween Horror Nights Japan since their inceptions in 2011 and 2012 respectively.
