The Plague Doctors were medical physicians who treated victims of the bubonic plague. In times of epidemics, these physicians were specifically hired by towns where the plague had taken hold. Since the city was paying their salary, they treated everyone: both the wealthy and the poor. They first appeared as scareactors in the Catacombs: Black Death Rising haunted house during Halloween Horror Nights: Twenty Years of Fear.
History[]
1347-1600
Throughout the countryside of Europe carts were piled high with the dead, and the acrid smell of rotting filled every house. Individuals called Plague doctors (Italian: physici epidemeie, Dutch: pestmeesters, German: pest- medici), silently moved from village to village examining and dissecting the dead or dying. These "doctors" would wear long black leather robes, leggings, capes, and boots covered in wax and suet to supposedly protect them from bacteria, wide brim hats to cover their heads and bird like masks that were filled with scented substances.
Plague doctors could not interact with the general public because of the nature of their business and the possibility of spreading the disease. However, a normally well guarded procedure of autopsies was freely allowed by plague doctors as a sacrifice towards finding a cure for the plague.
Plague Doctors were not medically educated, but still received large sums of money from the towns they inhabited. Affecting everyone from the richest to the poorest citizens; The Black Death does not discriminate.
October 1534
Carae, France: A mysterious illness, unlike anything previously seen was striking victims across political and social lines. Plague doctors ushered those infected into the local catacombs that had been filled with almost 30 generations of local people.
Local magistrates used the then new technique of "quarantine"; removing the stricken from the rest of the village. The plague doctors followed the dying into the catacombs to usher them into death.
Recent evidence, however, points to the townspeople of Carae, ignorant of the effectiveness of the quarantine, fearing for their lives they sealed the tombs exit. This doomed the Doctors inside along with the patients.
2010
Until L'Innocent was in its first stages of excavation, this area of the widespread catacombs had never been seen.
L’Innocent: Une Etude de La Pesta Noir was supposed to be an exhibit exploring these catacombs; however Fear brought both the victims and the Plague Doctors to life.
