Trivia[]

  • This scarezone was conceived as an extension of the Universal Monsters maze. Since the maze exited on French Street, it seemed natural to extend the maze with Hunchback & Phantom since both of their films take place in France [1].
  • But you can’t have a zone with just 2 characters so they conceived this idea of the masquerade ball with the other monsters wearing themed masks to conceal their true identities [2].
  • They thought of the Idea of monster masquerade from the masquerade ball from The Phantom Of The Opera [3].
  • There was Count Dracula where his mask was bat shaped [4].
  • The female characters were given elaborate period gowns with masks that also hinted at the characters underneath, some lesser known female movie monsters like Dracula’s Daughter, She-Wolf of London and Acksunamed’s Mummy [5].
  • The master of ceremonies was The Hunchback of Norte Dame in his “Festival of Fools” look. This was also eluded to in the set decor in the street [6].
  • The zone was choreographed to look like a dance with the scareactors doing figure eight moves in and out of the set pieces in the street [7].
  • With the long ball gowns, lighting and fog, the effect was as if the characters were floating around the street almost like ghosts of the studio’s past [8].
  • A character wearing a mask resembling the Gill-Man from Creature From the Black Lagoon can be seen in concept art, but due to the character's removal from the maze, this character did not appear.
  • Some of the decorative vignettes have text on them referring to Le Théâtre du Grand-Guignol, a famous French theater from the late 1800s and early 1900s known for its controversial and graphic horror shows.
