Hatchet and Chains: Demon Bounty Hunters was one of the ten haunted houses that were featured during Halloween Horror Nights 34. The house was located in Sprung Tent 1.

History & Location[]

On June 23rd, 2025, Hatchet & Chains: Demon Bounty Hunters was announced as one of the haunted houses coming to Halloween Horror Nights 34. The house was based on one of the b-movies that were featured in the Slaughter Sinema 2 haunted house during Halloween Horror Nights 33.

The house would be located in the Sprung Tent 1. In 2006, Universal built two hurricane-proof tents behind the World Expo area of the park specifically for holding Halloween Horror Nights haunted houses. This house would be located in the southernmost one (called Sprung Tent 1).

The codenames for this year's event were flowers and the codename for this house Carnation because it sounds like Tarnation, which is a phrase often used in the old west.

Description[]

They’re the Outlaws from Hell[]

In this Old West town, all hell is breaking loose. Red-hot lava demons are trying to possess everyone, melting everything in their path. Your only hope: Hatchet and Chains with their mystical weapons.

Story[]

In this Old West town, an old woman split open her tongue with a knife and summoned a horde of demons from Hell's Well as an act of protest against the construction of a train station. This causes bounty hunters Hatchet and Chains to ride their horses into town in an attempt to stop the demons. Chains is a human who can see and interact with demons and kills demons with a mystical chain. Hatchet is a demon whose life Chains saved, and thus they work together travelling across the Wild West hunting demons.

The demons in the town eventually attempt to escape on a train in order to spread mayhem across the country. Chains eventually blows the demons up with dynamite.

Settings[]

Experience[]

Queue and Facade[]

The entrance to the queue was located to the side of the Simpsons Ride. The queue would go through the extended queue of the Simpsons attraction, before going across a bridge towards Sprung Tent 1. Outside of the tent, guests would pass by a glowing red well, growling eerily, with multiple brutalized, crispy corpses strewn in and around it. A dead horse could also be seen. They then approached the porch of the town's post office, where Granny Hagardy could be seen slicing open her tongue with a knife to summon the Lava Demons while laughing maniacally. The entrance of the house was the front door of the post office.

Haunted House[]

After going through a small hallway composed of wooden boards with claw marks and chains hanging from the ceiling, guests enter the post office, where they are immediately attacked by a Lava Demon on the right. They would pass by the front desk. The wall behind contained many mail bags and letterboxes, as well, but they are quickly attacked by another couple of Lava Demons.

In the next scene, a demon could be seen in a burning fireplace, snarling and being pulled in the back by a chain. Hatchet can also be seen up top on the left, riding his demon horse and swinging an axe at guests. As guests walked by, another Lava Demon jumps out next to them. At the end of the room, guests find themselves behind the fireplace where Chains can be seen yanking on the demon inside of it while fighting off another Lava Demon that attacks him from behind.

Heading into the bank, guests would find money bags strewn everywhere, as another Lava Demon attacks them from the right. The corpse of a bank teller was also hanging up on the wall, and the hand of a Lava Demon would shoot out of her broken, bloody mouth.

Exiting the bank, guests would find themselves outside of the jail, where wanted posters can be found and many corpses could be seen hanging from the gallows (some of which twitch and moan). A demon possessing a young woman would jump out on their right and another Lava Demon (the one whose arm came through the bank) would pop out from next to one of the hanging corpses. A vulture watches from one of the fences. Passing under a hanging, bisected man, around his legs and through his blood puddle, a man could also be seen standing upright next to a window. In another window, the silhouette of a demon ripping out the Undertaker's jaw could be seen. Before entering into the next part of the house, guests pass by a coffin with a chained-up demon inside of it, and an empty coffin where a demon's hand rips out from the back of it.

Finding themselves inside of the funeral parlor, guests would find the Possessed Undertaker behind a coffin, commanding the corpses in the room to rise. Guests pass by a couple of more coffins with corpses inside of them. One coffin is tiny and emits a fiery glow, another wrapped shut in chains would bang as if a corpse inside were trying to escape. Taking a right turn towards two upright cadavers, guests are startled by the return of the demon hand bursting through an empty coffin on their right.

The next scene of the house was the Graveyard, which had multiple gravestones, some having lava in the dirt surrounding them. The Possessed Undertaker would attack guests from the left as a Cowboy Skeleton attacked from the right.

After that was the schoolhouse, with a massive hole in its facade. In fact, it was entirely in disarray, filled with rubble. It was billowing with smoke as the floorboards had lava and fire underneath it, and all the benches were held up by chains. Guests would find a possessed little girl who lures them in by asking for help before jumping out at them. The schoolteacher, Miss Carnation, would also jump out at them. Before exiting the scene, guests see a chalkboard of mathematic equations, and a Demon Horse would attack from the left side.

The next scene was an alleyway between buildings, mid-shootout, where one demon attacked from the porch on the right and another one attacked on the left. The silhouettes of Hatchet and Chains fighting demons with their respective weapons could also be seen. There were bullet holes everywhere that glowed, blasted air, and even smoked as if freshly fired. Guests then enter The Horse Tooth Hotel and Saloon, riddled with more bullet holes from the gunfight outside. Guests would be attacked by another demon before passing by the wall of pictures from the original scene in Slaughter Sinema 2.

Outside again, guests would be met with a train moving in front of them that is filled with demons as they felt the breeze it created. The Potbelly Stove Demon attacks with a sledgehammer from underneath a water tower while guests are distracted. In the train station, guests would find a corpse with a hatchet embedded in his head as well as a drop window in the ticket booth revealing a demon, all the while still seeing the train zooming by outside.

The finale of this house began with a cattle chute where Chains was up above guests throwing a stick of dynamite down, blowing up the wall beside him and, hopefully, the train tracks as well. The next room was pitch black, with a Lava Demon attacking on the left and a giant hellhound attacking on the right. Before exiting the house, guests would be able to see the train's wheel above them, signifying their plan was a success. However, exiting the house, they are suddenly attacked by a final Lava Demon that grew out of the mouth of an unsuspecting victim.

Thus ends the thrilling adventure of Hatchet & Chains: The Demon Bounty Hunters.

Trivia[]

  • Charles Gray was the show director for this haunted house.
  • The Lava Demons are a nod to a long-running joke about Lava Zombies being teased for Volcano Bay.
  • The scenic in this house was done by Dylan Kollath, who also worked on El Artista: A Spanish Haunting that year.
  • The physical possession in this house had three forms: demon, flesh, and "hodgepodge".
  • Various hatchet and chain props are seen scattered all throughout the house, informing guests that they are following Hatchet and Chains as they defeat the Lava Demons.
  • The corpses from this house were taken from a "morgue", where the A&D team stores dead body props based on what their physical condition is.
  • Permeating the entire house is a powerful smell of dirt and burning wood.
  • The first person to enter Hatchet and Chains each night will get a special certificate naming them the first to be claimed by Granny Hagardy.
  • Bear the facade, there were little pieces of mosaic tile amongst the rocks. This was added as a connection to the El Artista: A Spanish Haunting haunted house.
  • In the mail room at the beginning of the house, there is a list of names who receive mail, and all of them are references to past Halloween Horror Nights characters, such as "J. Schmidt", "A. Caine", "D. Oddfellow", "M. Barmy", and "C. Carver".
    • The left side of this list features names of the creative team.
  • In the post office, there are letters mailed to "1000 Old Universal", a reference to how Epic Universe on the south campus is considered New Universal.
  • The horse names listed in the post office were named after the creative team's pets.
  • For this year of Halloween Horror Nights, the Art & Design team would hide lizards inside all of their haunted houses as a recurring easter egg. In this house, the lizard can be seen in the gallows scene on a barrel next to the window and the man standing upright.
  • Thunder, a picture of a Pomeranian that has been featured in many haunted houses in the past, appears in this house behind the fireplace.
  • The wanted posters outside of the jail include references to members of the creative team, including "Cameron" and "Gray".
  • In The Undertaker building, the corpses have coins in their eyes as a nod to the superstition that they will use the coins to pay the ferryman of the River Styx to enter the afterlife. They were also used to cover their eyes if they are open.
  • There is a picture of an old woman in the schoolhouse that was reused from Ghost Town: The Curse of Lightning Gulch from Halloween Horror Nights 26.
  • The codename “carnation” is referenced in the school house with the teacher’s name written as “Miss Carnation” on the chalkboard.
  • The Horse Tooth Hotel and Saloon scene has props from the Slaughter Sinema 2 haunted house during Halloween Horror Nights 33, as a nod to the very inspiration behind this house.
  • The bell hanging from the Horse Tooth Hotel has a cat on it, a secret symbol that this is an actual cathouse (an Old Western brothel).
  • Directly outside the Horse Tooth hotel, to the left, you will see undergarments. This is an in-joke with the creative team, it's "elicit content for the western era."
  • There are references to the video game "Red Dead Redemption 2" in the haunted house, such as the name "Van der Linde" on the sign for the Train Station, nodding to the Van Der Linde Gang in the game.
    • There are also two corpses in this house with the names Arthur and Abigail, another nod to the game.
  • One of the demons found in this house has a rip in her blue dress, implying she's given it to a lover. We soon get to meet the corpse of her lover, wearing the blue fabric around his neck with a love letter to her on his lap. The letter reveals their names to be Abigail and Arthur. The corpse of Abigail can also be seen later on in the house with a rip in her blue dress.
  • On the final night, Hatchet was added up on the balcony with Chains in the finale.
