Universal's Museum of Horror: Chamber of Horrors was one of the five haunted houses that were featured during Halloween Horror Nights VIII: Primal Scream. It was located in Soundstage 22 along with Universal's Museum of Horror: Unnatural History. This house featured scenes from the classic Universal Horror Monsters such as Frankenstein and Dracula.

History and Location[]

Like the three previous years, Universal decided to have a haunted house based on the Universal Classic Monsters in 1998. The house would be located in Soundstage 22, which was where the previous Classic Monster house was located.

Soundstage 22 is one of the smaller soundstage facilities designed to be used as filming locations for movies and television shows. The house shared this location with another house that featured newer movie monsters.

The idea of a Universal Classic Monster haunted house would be revamped the following year in Universal's Creature Features in 3-D. This time however, the house would be located in Nazarman's instead of Soundstage 22 (like the four previous incarnations) and would be in 3-D.

Walkthrough[]

Queue and Facade[]

Outside the entrance of the haunted house was a stone gargoyle. The entrance to the house was a giant truss system that had the logo for Universal's Museum of Horror on it (seen here). The beginning of the house was an old, dusty museum with spiderwebs hanging down from a sign with the words "DIE HERE" written on it. The walls were lit by candelabras, and contained various movie posters, including one for Halloween II. This was where the line split.

Haunted House[]

At one point there was a spiderweb-covered organ followed by a woman with long, black hair looking out from a cavity in the wall covered by glass (possibly the Rat Lady in the Phantom of the Opera room). Later on there was Norman Bates wielding a knife threatening the guests next to a small screen with the silhouette of a scareactor, who would then jump out to scare guests. A later room featured a boarded up door and an alcove containing an old TV as decoration.

After this was a mess of old furniture and crates, between which a madwoman looked out. Concept art also reveals that an old graveyard was involved at some point. An electric chair may have also been featured early in the house (possibly the Frankenstein Room).

A few monster scenes that appeared in this house included Frankenstein, Dracula, Psycho, The Wolfman, and The Phantom. A Tree Monster also appeared somewhere in this house. At some point, guests walked through a farmhouse modeled after Night of the Living Dead with a zombie bursting out of a mattress. In this room, there were also many bunkbeds, one containing a laughing little girl.

  • The pipe organ from Universal's Casper film was featured in the house and repurposed to resemble The Phantom of the Opera's organ.
