Description[]

Ain’t afraid of ghosts, you say? That is, until you’ve experienced the all-new rift between worlds, releasing apparitions of all shapes and sizes. Enter with caution as you navigate through a deserted and dimly-lit New York after paranormal activity has engulfed the city. From the voracious Slimer to ghosts encapsulating the minds of the innocent, you’ll catch yourself thinking twice if you become their next victim. While the Ghostbusters have continuously saved the day with the help of their proton packs, this time, those who enter may not be so lucky.

Ain't afraid of no ghosts?

A rift between worlds has opened up releasing apparitions of every shape and size, from the voracious Slimer to the all-powerful Gozer the Gozerian. Step right into the world of the original film where ghoulish spirits, hideous specters and ectoplasm-dripping phantasms materialize where you least expect. Your screams only attract more ghosts, and even the Ghostbusters and their proton packs may not be able to avert a catastrophe this big. And we're talking Stay Puft Marshmallow Man big.

Experience[]

Facade[]

The facade was the Ghostbusters Firehouse with the Cab Driver Ghost outside on the left and a cutout of the Ecto-1 inside. Louis Tully would interact with guests before they entered the maze. Guests would then enter the maze on the right side of the facade.

Haunted Maze[]

After guests entered the maze they entered the office, where Janine Melnitz could be seen at her desk answering calls for the Ghostbusters. Occasionally, one of the Ghostbusters would burst into the scene with a Trap and then go back out of the scene.

After that guests entered the Containment Room where ghosts would appeared behind the walls and on the left. Guests couyld see white light coming from behind the bricks and a big flashing red light would go off. Guests would then enter the inside of the Containment Unit where there was green smoke coming out of a container.

Guests would then enter another dark room where Tony Scoleri would pop out with UV lightning behind him. Next, guests entered a black room with ghosts playing cards at a table which had a Showgirl Ghost separating herself from her body and an Electrocuted Ghost removing his head from his shoulders. Guests would enter another black room where Nunzio Scoleri would pop out with UV lighting behind him. Slimer would also appear in the scene.

Soon after, guests would enter the New York Public Library where there were file cabinets moving on the right. Guests could see the Library Ghost in front of them shushing before she turned into a hideous monster. Guests then went into a series of black hallways that had two scares of the hideous monster version of the Library Ghost.

Guests would then enter the Sedgewick Hotel and see the entrance sign for the hotel. They then entered a hallway where Peter Venkman came out of an elevator at the end while talking to guests.

Next, guests entered a scene where a UV Slimer would eat various things off of a table while Ray Stanz lined his Proton Pack along the wall and turned it on, shooting Slimer with UV beams. Then, guests entered a hallway with complete darkness at the end. All of a sudden, a light would come on and Slimer would come down the hallway shooting water at guests.

Guests then went into a series of black hallways with a Slimer scare. After that, they entered Dana Barrett's apartment and saw flashing lights and Dana Barrett on a chair being grabbed by hands. On the right, guests could see a bright white light behind a door with claws pushing on it.

The next scene saw guests go into various apartment hallways where there were two Terror Dog scares from holes in the walls. Guests would then go into a black hallway with a green revolving light where Zuul popped out from a platform.

Guests then entered the finale, where there were static figures of the Ghostbusters shooting UV Beams at the Stay Puff Marshmallow Man. Before they exited the maze, guests went through a series of black hallways where Slimer popped out..

  • Murdy had said about the maze that with the film being a mix of comedy and horror, it was the same structure they were trying to the tie the maze in the same way[1].
  • This is only the second maze that Universal Hollywood has created based on a comedy property, the first being This is The End 3D.
  • John Murdy has said that he had seen the film in theaters when he was in his junior year of high school[2].
  • Ivan Reitman and son Jason Reitman (Director of the new Ghostbusters film) were consultants for this maze alongside Dan Akroyd.
  • This house was very heavy on effects[3].
  • It was both a challenge for the team to make this house and recreate some of the classic ghosts from the film[4].
  • The house was puppet and scareactor focused[5].
  • Murdy had said that this maze was an opportunity that arrived to the team and came at a good timing[6].
  • The design team initially considered including ghosts from the upcoming Ghostbusters: Afterlife, but the film was not far enough along in production to do so[7].
  • One of the scenes that Murdy loves in this house is the one with Janine because the performer has the ability to trigger different dialog, sound effects, and lighting cues as she interacts with guests. Another scene he loves is Ray Stantz blasting Slimer[8].
  • One of Murdy's biggest highlights was giving Dan Akroyd a behind the scenes tour of the maze and meeting Ivan Reitman which to him was an honor as well[9].
  • It was stated at one point that the maze was vandalized, as someone came inside the maze with a sharpie and drew large Xs on the walls.
  • The Facade was the fire house and the iconic Ghostbusters sign, they also included a nod to the Ecto-1, reving its engine in the garage, an animated Taxi Cab Ghost & Louis Tully wandering around in a daze, handing out his CPA business card [10].
  • Stepping inside the fire house, guests find the beleaguered Janine Melnitz manning the phones as Egon arrives with a smoking ghost trap. The performers playing Janine had the ability to trigger different audio cues and lip synced to the tracks [11].
  • The opening scene had different Ghostbusters pop through with a smoking ghost trap [12].
  • In the original Ghostbusters script by Dan Aykroyd, the containment unit had a camera hook-up that allowed the Ghostbusters to see inside. Being a hardcore fan of Ghostbusters, Universal Creative pitched the idea to Ivan Reitman to bring that un-filmed idea to life [13].
  • The Containment Unit scene effect was inspired by an early script for Ghostbusters Afterlife. There was supposed to be a scene in the basement where the Ghostbusters looked into the containment unit and saw what the ghosts were doing inside it. It's a variation on the disappearing wall effect [14].
  • The disappearing wall effect was inspired also by GB2016, Murdy states "It's emulating the ghosts in Ghostbusters 2016 that were in the mirrors. If you saw that scene, in the Mercado Hotel, there was all these ghosts trapped in the mirrors." [15]
  • The green fog machine was use to simulate the containment unit exploding and the ghosts breaking free [16].
  • Murdy really liked the idea of that early script draft, so we decided to create a UV “spirit realm” where Slimer and other ghosts from the franchise would exist inside the containment unit, a supernatural subway to bridge the different locations from the film [17].
  • The Scoleri Brothers Tony and Nunzio were in the containment unit. Their triggers enabled an electrical surge image behind them since they both died in the electric chair [18].
  • The “Spirit Realm” sequence began with some of the ghosts (Sparky and Gertrude) from the reboot. They designed special costume parts with blacked out sections so a torso could float away from its legs or a head could leave its body. A variation on how we did The Invisible Man for Universal Monsters. [19].
  • In Dan Akroyd’s original script, we saw the ghosts hanging out, playing cards. So the next scene tries to bring this to life. It is also presented with black light art, creating an illusion of paranormal activity [20].
  • With Slimer, they did that pretty much the way the character was filmed on set for some sequences in the pre-CGI era of visual effects. The performers wore the UV costume and their legs were blacked out with the same material as the background of the set [21].
  • Slimer was the thread that took guests through the maze once he escaped the containment unit [22].
  • The portals between the spirit world and reality seen in this maze were borrowed from the Ghostbusters video game [23].
  • Leaving the containment chamber, guests wind up in the New York Public Library where guests run into the Library ghost and see her transform via a Pepper’s Ghost illusion [24].
  • In the Llbrary, books are stacked up on one wall and card catalogs are opening and closing on the other, controlled by a scare actor in another room who is seeing a video feed and moving the card catalogs to hopefully scare guests [25].
  • Next stop on the supernatural subway was the Sedgwick Hotel which they teased in the spirit realm with this neon sign (it actually didn’t have any neon on it, it was all done with UV paint) [26].
  • Venkman makes his appearance via an elevator. Each time he appeared, the audio program played a different line the performer lip synced to. “Had anyone seen a ghost?” “We came, we saw, we kicked its ass!” Etc. [27]
  • The scene of Ray blasting Slimer in the hotel was one of Murdy's favorites in the maze. It involved LED tubes imbedded in the wall with fiber optics & projection layered over it plus a guy swinging the pic backstage. It was all a looping sequence the performers had to mime to [28].
  • Then guests see Slimer again at the end of a long hallway he starts floating toward us (via a blackout performer on the other side of the wall) and then the lights go out, you get blasted with compressed air/water and Venckman says, “He slimed me!” [29].
  • The last stop on the supernatural subway was Dana’s apartment in Central Park West. Inside guests find Dana being attacked by her chair and a giant claw pushing through the kitchen door (The stretching wall effect from Stranger Things and Nightmare on Elm Street) [30].
  • In Dana's Apartment, on the table guests can see a Newspaper promoting the Ghostbusters.
  • Then the Terror Dogs start smashing through the apartment walls. These were huge puppeted figures with articulated jaws and light up eyes created by Magee FX [31].
  • And finally on the rooftop we see all four Ghostbusters locked in mortal combat with The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. This is one of the craziest scenes they’ve ever created for HHN [32].
  • Mr. Stay Puft was 3D printed in sections and then carved by robots using a 3D model. They then projection mapped his face on to that body so it could react to being cooked like a smore [33].
  • The maze ended like the 1984 film, with Slimer flying at you and Ray Parker Jrs theme song [34].
