Psycho Scareapy was one of the six haunted houses that was featured during Halloween Horror Nights 13. The original incarnation of the Shadybrook Rest Home was housed within the Jurassic Park Discovery Center. This house centered around the idea of the patients of the sanitarium having taken over the hospital and the chaos that followed.

History and Location[]

In 2003, Universal decided to have another haunted house based upon the idea of insane asylum inmates rising up and taking over the asylum. This one would be called Psycho Scareapy and would recreate the theme of insanity very well.

The house would be located in the Jurassic Park Discovery Center, a building located in the Jurassic Park area of the park that features a restaurant on the top floor and an interactive "play" area on the bottom floor. In 2003, Universal decided to build a haunted house on this bottom floor, so they placed a tarp in between the floors (so guests couldn't see the house from above) and they would build temporary walls for the haunted house. Due to the linear nature of Islands of Adventure, this was designed to be the fourth haunted house guests would enter.

The house would prove to be extremely popular and would receive the House of the Year award for 2003. It would also go on to have many sequels, the next one being the 2006 haunted house PsychoScareapy: Maximum Madness.

Description[]

There is an eerie calmness about the asylum… but something is not quite right. The inmates are running the asylum… From the reception area, you are ushered into the living quarters of the inmates… the cat and mouse games are only just beginning… the question is… who will be the victor? We urge you… Take the trip… and find out![1]

Get ready for a dose of shock treatment as the inmates are running the asylum. If you think you have any hope of escaping, you really ARE insane.

Experience[]

Various details below come from users in IOACentral's Halloween Horror Nights 13 review thread[2] and HauntFreaks' trip report[3].

Queue and Facade[]

Guests would enter the queue next to the Jurassic Park Discovery Center. The queue would go around the back of the Discovery Center and eventually reach the back door. In the queue line, there were mute patients who walked around the area, holding signs and props to interact with the guests in a silent but unnerving manner - this set the tone for the house to follow. An example of this was a man with a clipboard and glasses that said stuff like "Welcome to Shadybrook Rest Home. There is a pool, however, there is no swimming in the pool, there is no splashing in the pool, there is no diving in the pool, and there is no water in the pool, which makes the first three rules easier to enforce".

Guests would eventually reach the facade, which was the iron gate of Shadybrook Asylum with a hole broken through the wall on its left large enough for guests to walk through. Above, bursts of fire erupted from the roof on a set interval, heating up the guests below. After guests walked through the hole in the wall, they would go down a short hallway of chain-link fences before entering the house.

Haunted House[]

Like all of the haunted houses in 2003, this house allegedly had 13 scenes. Throughout the house, the scareactors acting as Shadybrook's many inmates tended to wander around their rooms, saying, murmuring, and screaming insane things (such as "Taflak"/"Aflac", "Franks and beans! Franks and beans!", and "Peter Pan is peanut butter") instead of jumping at you like a usual scareactor would. Some inmates also personalized their scares to specific guests walking through (for example, "The pigtails! Get the one with the pigtails!"). A couple of scenes/scares with an unknown placement in the house included a room "inside of a machine" with spinning walls and a scareactor on the wall that seemed to come to life and the mirror effect that ended 2002's Screamhouse (used twice in this house).

After entering Shadybrook, as the gentle, relaxing theme to A Summer Place played, guests would enter the first room, which featured a mad receptionist/nurse who would make jokes and lean over and scream at guests. She also squirted guests with blood (water) from a needle she held. Occasionally, she would shout things like "wait, I wanted to get it in the vein" and chase guests into the next room. This was swiftly followed by the dark and foggy intensive treatment ward, where patients wandered and popped in and out of padded rooms as strobe lights repeatedly flashed. One patient danced in the strobes, screaming "Disco fever!". Another would mumble the word "Taflak". Furthermore, one patient was found in the security monitoring room, screaming "The party switch is in the on position!". Then, in the kitchen, a psycho was seen wielding a meat cleaver, slicing up a still-screaming security guard from the hospital. After that, guests would enter the operating room, where a female patient could be seen holding the liver of a victim. She would offer it to guests.

In the TV room, cartoons were playing before a crowd of stuffed animals and masked inmates in chairs as more such inmates roamed around on their own. A female inmate would ask guests if they needed a "buddy" while a larger inmate shoved a stuffed animal in guests' faces. The inmates in this scene were also reportedly wearing masks of some kind. Some scareactors from this room wandered into the next room - the dentist's office - where people were strapped into chairs by the inmates with their bodies cut open. Some inmates stuck both their hands and stuffed animals they were carrying into the mutilated bodies while others carried dentist's drills, which squirted cold water at guests. Another inmate would pull back a curtain and ask guests if they had an appointment.

The next room was the infamous bathroom, where the inmates had smeared poop all over the walls and bathroom stalls, complete with the extremely strong, realistic smell of it that could be sensed throughout nearly the entire house. One filthy inmate was seen using a plunger on one of the toilets in the end stall. Guests would also be sprayed by filthy water in this scene. The exit to the room was through a curtain of hanging toilet paper, leading into the shower room. Guests here could go left or right for a stretch of the room before joining up again. Afterward, in the boiler room, hanging bodies and dusty portraits were scattered throughout as the furnace appeared as if it were about to explode.

The next scene was a set of shock therapy hallways. A couple of inmates attempted to block the path as more intense strobe lights than before flashed. Further into the hall, inmates shouted and rapped on cage-like bars surrounding guests' left and right, attempting to grab them. Before they finally exited the house, guests would be blasted by air hoses from a couple of scareactors.
