Descendants of Destruction was one of the ten haunted houses featured during Halloween Horror Nights 31. It was located in Sprung Tent 1 and was set in a post-apocalyptic subway station inhabited by mutants.

History and Location[]

On August 16th, 2022, Universal announced that a haunted house set in a subway station would be featured at their Halloween event that year. The house would be set in the same universe as Seeds of Extinction from Halloween Horror Nights 28, with the name even referencing that house. After the meteor, humans went underground in order to hide and eventually became mutated monsters.

This would not be the first time a house that takes place in a post-apocalyptic setting that mostly takes place in a subway, as this was the case for Doomsday during Halloween Horror Nights IX in which after Y2K the remaining mutated survivors migrated to the underground of New York.

In 2006, Universal built two hurricane-proof tents behind the World Expo area of the park specifically for holding Halloween Horror Nights haunted houses. This house would be located in the southernmost one (called Sprung Tent 1).

The codename of the house was Plunger since many of the survivors had been plunged into depths of the subway station.

Description[]

Deeper. Darker. Deadlier. Careful not to leave any of your scream squad behind as you descend the subway tunnels of a deserted New York. Lurking in the dark are hungry mutants looking to feast on the last remnants of humanity.

Deep in the subway tunnels below an abandoned, toxic city, mutated humans fight for survival in “Descendants of Destruction.” The deeper one goes, the darker their fate. In the fading light of the poisoned depths, hideous creatures who’ve long ago left their humanity behind prey on all who try to make their way through the darkness.

Story[]

After a meteor crashed into the Earth, wiping out most of humanity, the remaining survivors in New York City hid underground in the subways in order to escape from the hostile post-apocalyptic conditions. Centuries later, they became lost in the darkness of the underground and devolved into bloodthirsty mutant creatures. The house would be split into three parts, with the humans becoming more and more mutated as the house goes on. The lighting would also devolve, as guests would go from solar power to battery powered lights to bioluminescent mushrooms that would light the path near the end of the house due to how dark the underground has become.

Experience[]

Queue and Facade[]

The queue entrance was located to the right of the Men in Black restrooms. It went down a road that led to the front of Sprung Tent 2 where it would loop once around the side of the Men in Black building. Eventually, it would go past Sprung Tent 2 and would approach the side of Sprung Tent 1, where it would loop around a few times. Guests would then come to the front of the Sprung Tent, where they would come face to face with the facade.

The facade of the house was the outside of a decrepit New York Subway Train Station. It had a fence with weapons tacked on it and a crashed truck with a solar panel and some wires. A dumpster could also be seen from afar covered in blood. Guests would then go down a long corridor with wires leading down it and a "To Downtown" sign before entering the house.

Haunted House[]

Guests enter the house and were immediately attacked by a Maw Creature on the left. Guests would see a subway train behind a gate in the distance. Guests continued on and were attacked by a Meteor Survivor wearing a gas mask and wielding a spear. A panel would also drop down revealing a skeleton inside it. Walking past some broken turnstiles and the side of a subway, guests would enter the electrical room.

Once inside, guests would find many flickering lights and electric panels that would make loud electrical noises. Another Survivor would make sparks on a nearby gate, and water dripped from above. Next, guests would enter through the side of a dingy subway car full of junk. As soon as they did, they would be attacked by another survivor on the right. Green lights would flicker, and a Meteor Survivor would attack guests with a knife behind one of the walls.

After that, guests would re-enter the subway station where a Meteor Survivor wearing a hood would reach down at guests from a platform on the right. Another hooded Survivor would pop out at guests on the left holding a severed head. Guests would find themselves underneath a derailed subway train that crashed into the floor with a corpse hanging out of a window next to guests. Going underneath it, guests would be surprised as a subway train next to them honks and blares its headlights while another Survivor jumped out on the right.

Next, guests would go down a hallway with a strung up bloodied body hooked to some jumper cables. A Mutated Survivor would jump out of an alcove in the hallway. Guests then entered a scene where a Post-Apocalyptic Butcher could be seen grilling humans, rats, and rabbit, and guests could smell the meat cooking. A Mutant Survivor with a heavily deformed face and a third eye on his forehead would pop out at guests, and later in the room a chained up Post-Apocalyptic Survivor would pop out of a hole in the wall screaming.

Guests then went down a small grassy hallway leading into the entrance of a cave where a Mutant Survivor popped out from the left. Guests would look up and see a mirror simulating height above them, showing how deep down into the caves they are. As guests left the hallway, another Mutant Survivor would reach down from the ceiling and grab at them. Guests then found themselves next to a large vault door with dynamite attached to it, where the Mutated Butcher jumped out on the right. Guests could see lightbulbs powered by batteries covering the wall on the left. Entering a small hole into the cave, guests could see the light bulbs on the left have gone out and would be attacked by another Mutated Survivor.

The finale of the house took guests into the cave, which was covered in bright UV paint. Strobes would flash lighting them up. Three Mutant Rock Creatures in UV costumes would jump out at guests from behind stalagmites. Going down a short hallway filled with bioluminescent mushrooms and the smell of dirt, guests would be attacked by three more Rock Creatures before exiting the house.
