Description[]

Some houses retain the evil acts that were committed within their walls. The spirits of the victims of these violent transgressions linger on, long after the dead have been buried, to haunt the living. Such is the case with Allerdale Hall, an ancient, crumbling Gothic mansion in the remote English countryside that has seen its fair share of tragic events. Just below the surface of the house is a dormant clay mine that bubbles up to the surface to stain the snow-covered landscape with patches of blood-red clay. This is why the locals refer to Allerdale Hall as Crimson Peak. Welcome to Crimson Peak: Maze of Madness, a terrifyingly immersive experience inspired by the new motion picture by Guillermo del Toro, the modern master of Horror and Dark Fantasy. Your journey will take you through Allerdale Hall, a creepy and cavernous manor house that’s haunted by the vengeful spirits of its past inhabitants and the unspeakable dark secrets of the fractured family that still clings to their cursed ancestral home! Beware of Crimson Peak!

Experience[]

Facade[]

The Facade was the Allerdale Hall Arch with the Words Crimson Peak on it that led to a Graveyard which was the Funeral of Edith Cushing's Mother. Guests then enter the Maze.

Haunted Maze[]

Guests go down a Black Hallway and then enter Edith Cushing's Childhood Home. They go down a Hallway where the Doorknob is constantly turning along with the sound of banging on a Door. The light goes out and Mrs. Eleanor pops out at guests.

Guests enter Edith Cushing's Room where there is a Dollhouse and Toys. There is a Static Figure of her in Bed as a Projection of Mrs. Eleanor's is shown reaching down towards her. Mrs. Eleanor then pops out at guests again before they exit the Scene.

Guests go down a Black Hallway with String hanging down. Guests approach the Facade of Allerdale Hall covered in Snow. Guests enter and the room is lit with candles. Guests see a Scrim Effect of Lady Beatrice Alexandra Sharpe behind a Painting of her. Margaret McDermott then pops out from the left at guests where there is a window by her with snow on it.

Guests then see Bricks walls with Red coming out of them and go down a Hallway with Butterfly Wallpaper. Lucille Sharpe pops out at guests with a Cleaver. Guests then see a Pepper's Ghost Effect of Pamela Upton to which Margaret McDermott pops out at guests from behind a Door.

Guests then enter the Bathroom which is lit with Candles and see a Static Figure of Lady Beatrice Alexander Sharpe in the Bathtub overfilling with Blood with a Cleaver in her head. Behind her was a Window covered in Snow. Lady Beatrice Alexander Sharpe would then pop out at guests.

Guests then enter the Bedroom where Margaret McDermott pops out from behind curtains at guests. The room had the sounds of Moths and guests see a Projection of Snow and Moths flying behind a Window. Mrs. Eleanor then pops out at guests from behind a Mirror.

Guests then go down a Black Hallway with a Feather Duster and they then enter the Attic where there is a Projection of Moths flying on the wall. There then is a Pepper's Ghost Effect of a Static Figure of Enola Sciotti pointing right behind a Wall Mural. Guests are then attacked by a Curtain Monster who would blend into the Wall.

Guests then enter a Room with more Bricks with Red coming out of them. Lucille Sharpe pops out at guests from behind a Wall Panel. Guests go through the Elevator to then enter the Clay Pits. Lucille Sharpe pops out at guests while they go through the Elevator.

In the Clay Pits were the Pits and some of them were locked. Margaret McDermott would pop out at guests from the left and Lucille Sharpe would pop out at guests from the right. There then were 2 Pop Up Characters of Margaret McDermott from the Clay Pits that would spit Water at guests.

Guests would then enter a continuation of the Clay Pits where the Walls were all red. Guests would then be scared by Mrs. Eleanor behind a Fence as guests then exited the Maze.

Trivia[]

  • The codename for this maze was the "Name Game 2.0". [1].
  • When Crimson Peak finally came around in 2015, Guillermo Del Toro was very involved in the creative process of the maze. In fact, many of the specific ideas in the maze came directly from him. He was a big fan of HHN and really seemed to enjoy the process of making a maze of his film. [2].
  • When Murdy first screened a rough cut of the film, he was honestly scared to death. The scale of Allerdale Hall was impossible to try and reproduce for a maze. The facade was particularly problematic so he and his team keyed in on the sign and the graveyard as a way to enter the experience. [3].
  • They transported guests to Edith’s bedroom when she was a child and encounters the ghost of her dead mother who warns her to “Beware of Crimson Peak.” Guilermo wanted to emphasize the paranormal in these scenes, like a jiggling doorknob and the shadow of the ghost’s hands over the bed. [4].
  • Aside from the paranormal effects like the jiggling door (which was actually done by a live performer behind the set who had a video feed of the guests to time it right), the ghost of Edith’s mother was the main scare in Edith's bedroom scenes. [5].
  • After the prelude, you enter Allerdale Hall which was one of the biggest sets in the maze. It was designed open like this so you’d get a good look at the large portrait of Lady Sharpe which was a scrim screen illusion to introduce the first of the Crimson ghosts. [6].
  • Murdy referred to Crimson Peak as “High Horror” during publicity because of its Gothic Romance aesthetic that reminded me of the old Hammer Horror films. The detail of the set and character design was beautiful and horrific at the same time. The entry hall scene tried to emulate that. [7].
  • The Crimson Ghosts in the maze were all created by Magee FX.[8].
  • The grand hallway was one of the most complicated scenes to recreate due to the elaborate arches that had to be custom cut, the bizarre moth wallpaper and the Pepper’s Ghost illusion of the crawling Crimson Ghost. [9].
  • The bathroom with the Crimson Ghost in the tub was one of the coolest sets in the maze according to Murdy. It had an effect for the bloody water spilling over the tub and on to the basin/floor but Murdy thinks most people missed it. There was just too much to look at according to Murdy. [10].
  • After the bathroom was the bedroom scene. Butterflies and moths were a big motif in GDT’s film. He wanted to show them fluttering in the windows so Murdy worked with his visual effects company who provided them with custom animation. [11].
  • In a black transition, you hear the fluttering moths and feel them brush against you via a Blackout Performer with a wand with an ostrich feather. Then you enter the attic where you see a scrim illusion of the Crimson Ghost and her child. [12].
  • The last main scene in the maze was the basement with the clay pits. It featured two pop out characters, one on either side of the path, that were controlled by blackout performers behind the set. Both figures had compressed air and water blasts that came out of their mouths. [13].
  • Towards the end of the run, Guillermo Del Toro came down to experience the maze. Murdy took him through it & as each scare happened he smiled & said, “It works John! It works!” He got to see all the ideas they discussed come together with a live audience...and he was very happy. [14].
  • When looking out the windows inside of the maze, del Toro wanted to see the night sky, snow falling and moths, so that was all created with visual effects and audio. Because the performers are not able to touch the people walking through the maze, guests would feel the moths on your face and body. [15].
