Character Description[edit | edit source]
Charles Lee Ray, also known as The Lakeshore Strangler but best known as Chucky is the main antagonist of the Child Play franchise. He is most famously voiced by Brad Dourif and many people see Talking Tina from The Twilight Zone episode "Living Doll" as the archetypal "killer doll", being the inspiration for Chucky from the Child's Play series as well as other possessed doll types.
Biography[edit | edit source]
As a child, Charles Lee Ray had a difficult life. His Irish-American mother had come from a wealthy family and was a bartender and dancer, but because she was a dwarf, other kids made fun of him. To make matters worse, his Austrian-American father was a raging and an obnoxious alcoholic who abused him and his mother. Eventually, Charles became a serial killer and his abusive mother was his very first victim.
On November 9th, 1988, Charles is chased down after a failed robbery, by detective Mike Norris. After he is fatally shot, his partner in crime Eddie Caputo decides to bail and drives away in the get-away van, despite Charles's pleas. Stumbling into a toy store, Charles desperately uses his voodoo magic to transfer his soul into a Good Guy doll. The chant causes lightning to burst through the store skylight and cause an explosion. Although Mike finds Charles's dead body, his soul successfully transferred into the doll, which is found by a peddler.
Inspiration for Chucky[edit | edit source]
Chucky is modeled after several dolls, particularly the popular My Buddy doll line from the mid 1980s and his name is a blend of three notorious murderers:
- Charles (after Charles Manson)
- Lee (after Lee Harvey Oswald, the man who assassinated president John F. Kennedy)
- Ray (after James Earl Ray who is responsible for assassinating Martin Luther King Jr.)
