Black Sabbath 13-3D was one of the six haunted mazes that were featured during Halloween Horror Nights 2013 (Hollywood). It was located in the 747 Area.

Description[]

Since the dawn of time, the number 13 has symbolized evil, bad luck, catastrophe, and even death. One band's music warns of these evils and far, far worse. Welcome to Black Sabbath: 13-3D, where you'll begin your descent in a demon-filled cathedral and continue on through graveyards, madhouses, corpse-filled battlefields and a nuclear apocalypse with mutated beasts. Listen for the sounds of agony with every chord; your pain is music to their ears.

Experience[]

Facade[]

The outside facade of Soundstage 747 was a arch with mini demons on both sides and a circle in the middle saying 13. Guests would then enter the maze.

Haunted Maze[]

Guests would enter the graveyard outside of the Black Sabbath 13 Cathedral. Guests could see a angel static figure changed with UV from nice to evil. Guests would pass gravestones and would be attacked by the Figure in Black Stiltwalker outside the cathedral. Guests would then enter the facade of the cathedral which had a circle with a projection of the number 13.

Guests would go down a hallway with archs of living skeleton statues frozen with 2 of the Living Statues being real and they would pop out at guests.

Guests would then enter the Inner Sanctum with Lucifer in front of a arch made of skulls and the number 13 cutting into Lucifer's Bride who would scream for help. While guests are distracted a Demon Living Statue from the right would pop out at guests.

Guests exited the cathedral and entered a graveyard. They would see gravestones with skeletons by them. 2 Children of the Grave would come out and pop out at guests.

Guests then went to the outside of the Osbourne Asylum with the number 13 on the side. Guests entered and saw a Plague Doctor drilling into the skull of the Trepanation Victim inside a cell. Guests would see a man tied down to a chair with his head frozen inside a cube on the right. Guests then saw another Plague Doctor inside a cell with a frozen woman hanging.

Guests then entered a padded cell with writing on the walls of the lyrics from the song, Paranoid. Guests would see the Paranoid Kill victim on a table missing the lower half of their body as the Paranoid Inmate would pop in with a chainsaw attacking guests.

Guests then went down a black hallway and then entered No Man's Land where bodies are hanging down from the trenches. A War Pig would attack guests from above while another one would pop out from within the trenches at guests. Guests then entered a black hallway where a Gas Mask Nurse from both sides would attack guests from above.

Guests then entered a nuclear testing site in the Nevada Desert where the walls were all green and mannequins were damaged. Guests then approach the Nuclear Test House as the Iron Man Stiltwalker attacks guests from the right before they enter the house.

Guests entered the Nuclear Test House where a Nuclear Mutant would pop out from behind the front door. Guests would see projections outside the windows of a atomic bomb going off as another Nuclear Mutant would then pop out at guests.

Guests would go down a few hallways leading into the Nuclear Waste Scene which was a scene where the walls were covered in green dots and nuclear waste was spilling into the scene. There would be 3 Radioactive Demons blending into the walls attacking guests.

Guests would then enter a short black hallway before coming across the same arch from the beginning of the maze as another Iron Man Stiltwalker pops out to scare guests before they exit the maze.

Trivia[]

  • The codename for this maze was "The Trickster". [1].
  • They had two ideas on how to do the maze. The team eventually went with Chris William's idea of how to do it [2].
  • The maze featured scenes in four different time periods: Medieval, Victorian, Early 20th Century, and the 1950's [3].
  • This maze was the hardest maze for them to make in 2013. [4].
  • Shortly before opening, Ozzy and Geezer Butler (Black Sabbath’s bass player/lyricist) toured the maze in process. They hadn’t installed the demon statues yet so Murdy stood in for them. [5].
  • Murdy took Geezer, Ozzy & his family through the maze opening night and they had a blast. When they came out, there were thousands of people chanting “Ozzy! Ozzy!”. [6].
  • The look of the “Figure in Black” referenced in the lyrics for the song "Black Sabbath" was inspired by a sculpture called “Anonymous” in Budapest. [7].
  • This Maze was a opportunity for them to do a new twist on the "Living Statue" scare by making them apart of the architecture. [8].
  • The Inner Sanctum scene was inspired by the lyrics in the Song, N.I.B. "You are the first to have this love of, Forever with me 'till the end of time" and "My name is Lucifer, please take my hand".
  • The look of the character of Lucifer was based on the infamous figure "Anton LaVey". [9].
  • In the Graveyard scene, the headstones were from the film “Van Helsing.” They’ve shown up at HHN many times. [10].
  • The Graveyard Scene was inspired by the song, Children of the Grave.
  • The mental asylum was inspired by Bedlam. In the asylum, there was a plague doctor who performed trepanning on an inmate (which was an early treatment for mental illness where they would bore holes in the skull to release evil spirits). [11].
  • The Plague Doctor performing trepanning on a Inmate was inspired by lyrics from the song, Cornucopia "You're gonna go insane. I'm trying to save your brain".
  • In the Mental Asylum scene, they reused the frozen woman prop from SAW: Game Over as reference to the Sabbath song “Snowblind.” Eternally punished for her addiction. There was a bloody mound of cocaine at her feet. [12].
  • In the Mental Asylum Scene, they reused the Drowning Box from SAW: Game Over as well. [13].
  • The Drowning Box was a possible reference to Lyrics from the Song, "I Won't Cry for You" "And it feels like you're drowning".
  • The Padded Cell Scene was inspired by the lyrics from the song, Paranoid "Finished with my woman 'cause She couldn't help me with my mind. People think I'm insane because I am frowning all the time."
  • In the Padded Cell scene, the writing on the walls was inspired by a picture from an abandoned asylum that Murdy had found. The inmate in the scene had the number 13 carved into his head. [14].
  • There was a WW1 Scene planned where you walked inside a Tank for War Pigs. The Tank was chewing people up. It was cut due to spacing. Only the trenches scene ended up in the maze. [15].
  • The War Pigs Look were inspired by propaganda posters of German soldiers from that era of WW1. [16].
  • Iron Man Stiltwalker's look was inspired by the album cover "Never Say Die" which was the last Sabbath Album Ozzy did before the reunion. [17].
  • The Nuclear Test House Scene was inspired by lyrics from the song, "Electric Funeral", "Flashes in the sky. Turns houses into sties. Turns people into clay. Radiation minds decay."
  • The look of the Nuclear Section was inspired by lyrics from the song, "Hand of Doom", "First it was the bomb", "Your skin starts turning green".
  • In the 1950’s, they used to set up mannequins in houses at test sites to measure the damage/potential injury. That inspired the Inner Sanctum scene where you see a atomic bomb go off out the window and get attacked by Nuclear Mutants. [18].
  • Murdy believes the 3D "Dot" room effect was the most successful version in this maze. [19].
