Description[]

Step inside the twisted world of American Horror Story, the award-winning anthology horror series that’s been terrorizing TV viewers since 2011. Your journey begins at MURDER HOUSE, a century old residence on the outskirts of Los Angeles with a tragic past. The unfortunate souls who perished inside are forever trapped within its walls and each room harbors its own horrible secret. Your next stop is the creepy backwater town of Jupiter, Florida where a struggling FREAK SHOW has taken up residence. The human oddities on display inside the big top are nothing compared to the murderous men and women who fight to control this psychotic circus. Finally, you will check in to the HOTEL Cortez, a ruinous relic of a bygone era that conceals a torture chamber of murder and madness! Inside the hotel’s haunted hallways lies a host of supernatural characters bent on making you a guest for all eternity.

Trivia[]

  • The codename for this maze was "Vespucci". [1].
  • AHS cast members Evan Peters, Denis O’Hare and Finn Whitrock all experienced the maze. [2].
  • They chose to Murder House because it was the first season and Hotel because it was (at the time) the latest season. They chose to also do Freak Show because they felt it was a different flavor and that Twisty was scary. [3].
  • Since this was an anthology maze, they had to come up with a neutral concept for the facade that could encompass all 3 seasons. Murdy really liked the opening titles for the show so they created this marquee and used a video screen to help communicate the seasons to the uninitiated. [4].
  • Each season maze was being set on their Halloween episodes. [5].
  • The Murder House section started with Addie Langdon sitting on the steps on Halloween night, from there you continued through the house and meet The Rubberman. [6].
  • There were many different timelines/parallel stories going on in Murder House so they tried to cover a lot of them in the maze. One of the stories they wanted to cover was Larry Harvey, who burned his entire family alive. [7].
  • This scene in the burned house with the ghosts of the Harvey family was Murdy's favorite in the Murder House section. [8].
  • The silicone masks designed for Mrs. Harvey & the Harvey girls featured invisible UV highlights to try & recreate the glowing embers that was a digital effect on the show. [9].
  • The set design and the work of the prop/dressing team in the Burned House Scene would later inform a scene in Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man. [10].
  • Next up was a trip into the bathroom to meet the Piggy Man. This scene was set up so guests would first see the Piggy Man materialize in the mirror. This was to pull their focus over to the sink, so they wouldn’t be ready for the real Piggy Man jumping through the shower curtain. [11].
  • The final section of Murder House took guests back in time to the original owner Charles Montgomery and the terrible things he did in his basement. This gave them a chance to recreate the real life Black Dahlia Murder as featured on the show. [12].
  • Albino Langdon was a character suggested to be put into the Maze by Ryan Murphy as an Easter egg for the fans. He was another of the Langdon children, mentioned on the show but never actually seen (his scenes were cut from the show) until the maze.[13].
  • The video dividers in the maze served as a transitions into each season to inform guests who may not have watched the show know where they were heading. [14].
  • Freak Show began with a trip through the woods where guests discover a murder scene and Twisty the Clown’s infamous school bus. Their scenic vendor made this half bus, it was computer carved out of foam. [15].
  • The grand reveal (Murdy's favorite sequence in Freak Show) was the midway facade with these amazing sideshow banners (which are files he got from the show’s art department). [16].
  • Freak Show was a short section due to the Size of the Freak Show midway facade. [17].
  • Inside the big top guests traveled past an audience of freaks, got attacked by Dandy Mott and watched Chester Creb saw Maggie in half. [18].
  • Murdy always thought the prop team did a great job in this scene creating all the freak show characters, the ventriloquist dummy Marjorie, etc. [19].
  • Freak Show ended with the guests being attacked by a cymbal clapping monkey, a character only featured in the opening titles for the show. [20].
  • Hotel was very tough to pull off scenically due to the elaborate Art Deco details. The art director, Chris Williams, came up with a solution for the doors. They were actually a digital print with plant on numbers and other dimensional details. [21].
  • The creepiest scene (and most complicated) in this section was the Mattress Freak. The scene was designed for the performer playing this character to rise up through the bed as part of his scare. Since he had a lot of air brushed body make up, that meant constant touch ups. [22].
  • The house eventually led you into the lair of James March, the deranged original architect of the Hotel. Inside his lair, was the Ten Commandments killer’s trophy case, which was all custom built by the prop team. [23].
  • The last scenes took guests through the bricked in section of the Hotel where they run into Valentino and his wife Natacha and finally into the Countess’ room where she is jealously guarding her baby. [24].
  • The final scare was inspired by the curtain hands from the Hotel main title sequence.
