Description[]

Step inside the twisted world of American Horror Story, the award-winning anthology horror series.

Deep in the backwoods of North Carolina, there is an isolated farmhouse that has witnessed centuries of horror. Legend has it that the house was built close to the site of the infamous "Lost Colony of Roanoke", an English settlement that mysteriously vanished back in the late 1500's. Though no one knows for sure what happened to the doomed colonists of Roanoke, the suffering of the residents of the cursed farmhouse has been well documented; a legacy of murder and madness that extends back into the murky past in an unbroken chain of horror. They say that the most dangerous time to visit the farmhouse is during the first moon after the harvest...the Blood Moon!

But in the woods beyond the haunted farmhouse, even worse horrors await. Whispers of cannibalism, blood-sacrifices and murderous spirits who still cling to the cursed land.

Experience[]

Facade[]

The facade was a theater with red curtains and a cutout of the Piggy Man with a knife and a UV red blood moon above him. Guests would then enter the theater.

Haunted Maze[]

Guests would go down a black hallway with a video screen of Elias Cunningham explaining what has been happening in the Shaker House.

Guests would then enter a long hallway and enter the woods where they could see a man with a pig mask being sacrificed over a fire on the right and the charred corpse of Mason on the left. While guests were distracted, a Piggy Man would pop out from the left and scare guests.

Guests would continue down the hall where they would see the Butcher ripping the intestines out of Cricket Marlowe. They would then stumble upon the Shaker House which had a UV red moon above it. Next to the house were mannequins of the Roanoke Settlers. One of them was real and would jump out at guests. There were also burnt campers on the stakes next to the building. Guests would then enter the Shaker House.

Inside the Shaker House was hallway with stickmen above and paintings on the wall. At the end of the hallway on the defiled Edward Mott painting, the Butcher would pop out via a drop down panel.

In the next scene, guests would see bloody pig tails on the wall that would move. While they were distracted, a Piggy Man would pop out from the right. Guests would then continue into another hallway with windows of the house on the right and a Piggy Man scare on the left. Guests would then enter the dining room.

Inside the dining room was a dining table. Bridget Jane would pop out on the right and further in the room Miranda Jane would pop out from the left at guests. There was a wall in the room that spelled "Murder" in red. As soon as guests exited the scene, a Piggy Man would scare them from behind.

Guests would then go down a hallway with a series of paintings where the Butcher would pull back a defiled Edward Mott painting and scare guests.

Guests then went into the cellar where they could see Matt hacked to pieces on the floor and a TV that would come on showing Elias Cunningham saying "Murder." A Piggy Man would also pop out at guests.

Then, guests went into the tunnels which consisted of a long hallway where Grace Chen would pop out at guests near the end. Before guests exited the tunnels, Edward Philippe Mott would pop out from in front of them.

Outside the tunnels, guests would find themselves back in the woods as Ishmael Polk would pop out at guests from behind a tree. Guests would then enter the Polk's cabin and see a mannequin of Elias Cunningham on the left on the ground with his leg missing. Guests would then enter the next scene.

In the next scene, guests see a mannequin of Audrey Tindall tied down as Mama Polk popped out at guests with an axe. There were also glass jars containing ears in the scene. Going further into the cabin, guests would see Jether Polk cutting the flesh off of Lee Harris's leg.

Guests would exit the Polk Cabin and see the Butcher popping out from the left. Guests would go down a black hallway and then into a black room with three Wicker Tree Monsters. Two of them were fake and one of them was real and would pop out to scare guests. After that, the Piggy Man would jump out at guests from a boo-hole as they went down a black hallway to exit the maze.

Trivia[]

  • The codename for this maze was "Lemonade" [1].
  • This house was technically announced first, with it being announced that American Horror Story would be returning to the event back in April, but not specifying what season it would be based on [2].
  • This was their second year of featuring AHS at the event and the original plan was to do another compilation maze (Asylum, Coven, Roanoke) but things changed and they totally redesigned it [3].
  • Each season of AHS is its own world. Each season has plenty of content for its own maze. So they wanted to focus on a single season this time [4].
  • All of the appearances of the ghosts are based on how they looked in the final episodes where the "real" versions appeared rather than the dramatized ones [5].
  • They kept the design for the facade in the style of the previous year with a video screen that played clips from the show. The narrative thread was the audio and video recording of Dr. Elias Cunningham, telling the story of the horrors he had experienced at Shaker House [6].
  • The reason they didn’t do the house as the facade is they wanted the experience to begin in the woods and then approach the house in a light controlled environment where they could do that huge “blood moon” (which had UV elements to make it glow). They always have to think about early entry [7].
  • The first scene was a large one. Guests meandered through the woods passing the human sacrifices while being stalked by the Pig Man [8].
  • Stepping inside the house, they lead guests through 3 different hallways leading them deeper and deeper into the house. The use of multiple hallways was intentional. They wanted to create a claustrophobic feeling and get the scares up close [9].
  • One fun detail in the hallway section were the bloody pig tails nailed to the wall. These moved back and forth, manipulated by a mechanism similar to windshield wipers [10].
  • The hallways lead to the dining room where guests were attacked by the nurses from opposite sides of the room. They tried to nail all the set and dressing details from the show, from finding the same wallpaper they used to recreating the weird bird sculpture by the “murder” wall [11].
  • Then it was right back to those claustrophobic hallways. This one featured The Butcher attacking you through a portrait of original house owner Edward Mott [12].
  • Then it was into the basement, a heavily propped out environment with the body of Matt hacked to bits and a TV playing the last testament of Dr. Cunningham. Pigman was the scare, charging in with his axe [13].
  • They continued deeper into the bowels of the old house and into an old tunnel system where guests were attacked by the Chin Ghosts as well as the Ghost of Edward Mott [14].
  • The tunnels lead to the Polk’s cabin, which housed a family of cannibals. Murdy thinks the performer for Lee did a great job of miming to the point source speaker providing her screams as the Polk brother cut chunks of flesh from her leg [15].
  • The final scare in the maze was a variation on the “one of these things is not like the other” scare with giant wickermen positioned around the room. Because of the height of them, they assumed everyone would think they were props till one of them moved (stiltwalker) [16].
  • The ending scene with the large twig scarecrows was based on one of many teasers for the 6th season of American Horror Story before the season's theme was announced. It was based on the teaser, "The Harvest" [17].
